Gee3 is cutting corners

Literally cutting corners (maybe a little TOO close! )

There was a bike clinic on basic handling skills, climbing and descending this past Sunday (June 8th).

I thought the class was very helpful (especially the bumping tires and paceline sessions). Climbing - I realized I just have to keep working on my strength and stamina (all those young punks were dropping me like a bad habit!).

Here's a short video of Gee3 scaring the instructor on one of our descents (the file is about 18 megs - so don't try to download if you are on dialup):

https://lance.bcgracing.com/Gee3.MOV

I'll try to get some pictures up later...

Is that some sort of Apple file type? I couldn't play it on Windows. Since I witnessed it live, I'm mostly interested in whether any audible "Holy crap!" exclamations made it onto the video. If so, it wasn't me.

Looks like he misjudged it at first and turned-in too early. Straightened back out and turned-in again. He hit the apex pretty good after he changed his line.

There were "Oh My God!" exclamations...
Was that the instructor following Gary?
Where was that descent?

Can't wait for the next BF ride. There should be a pretty good group/paceline going what with everyone getting all trained up and all.

Yeah, the "Oh My God!" was Matt, our instructor.

The file is a quicktime movie

Quicktime - thanks.

Much less scary in the video than live!

LanceMach, you don't look "vintage" enough to be grumbling about young punks. What are you, mid-thirties? Maybe you just need to stop running all those marathons and start riding more again. Oh wait, I'm thinking of the other Lance...

The descent is W Loyola Dr, not far away from it's junction with Eastbrook Ave.
Yeah, the instructor, Matt, was right behind Gary ("OMG" are his words )

Great video, and superb quality too. It was actually watchable.

After my fall on Altimont, seeing stuff like this gets my heart beat up. OMG is right.

Mid-thirties? Dude, you should be wearing prescription cycling glasses! I just turned 46. However, I have two teens (one of each flavor), so, in parent years, I'm actually 84.

Of course, if you ask SWMBO, she'll tell you that I have the maturity of a 12 year old (which is just fine with me!).

I wish I would have caught Matt coming down that curve - it was beautiful to watch! And you're right - it was much scarier "live."

The video is pretty clear, if I say so myself. I was looking for a better way to tape my open track sessions in my old Mustang and found out about the camera on CornerCarvers (motorhead forum for those of us who like the twisites). I've stopped using "real" camcorders and now use the digital. It's a snap to move the files to the PC, it shoots in widescreen format and I think the results are better than anything I've used before. It's a Panasonic FX3 that I picked up used off of eBay for something like $70. I mounted it on the bike recently (and taped myself coming down Mt. Diablo) and the results weren't bad, but I have to find a better mounting place/method.

LanceMach, I use to browse corner-carvers.com a while back (when I had more free time). If nothing else, it is a very entertaining site.

Let me know when you hit the track next and I'll try to join you. Right now, I'm planning Thunderhill in Sept (too hot there now) with Trackmasters.

I'm noticing people seem to look about ten years younger when they're on a bike. (By the way, the fastest climber I know is in his fifties, so maybe you just need to ripen a few more years.)

Wow, that's pretty awesome video quality for $70!

Sorry, late to my own party...

(Apparently the 'net nazis here at work won't allow me to download Quicktime... so I'll have to check it out when I get home.)

Was it one of the first two passes I took? I know I scared the crap out of everyone! But you should have seen my shorts afterwards!! hahaha!

I think I am the text book example of what NOT to do! Doh!

But in my defense I'm not used to taking turns, let alone S turns, at speed. Which is pretty obvious!

But Matt's a good coach so I'll take what he taught me and try to better utilize it when I go on my rides.

I know on the final pass I felt better but my upper body was still too stiff and I wasn't confident in my line. So it made me twitchy. It's that fear thing and that self preservation thing that kicks in to jack everything up! That's my excuse and I'm stickin' to it! haha!

We should have asked Matt to descend again so you could get it on video. It was a thing of beauty and amazement that someone can go that fast and switch from right to left to right so fast.

So, ummm... thanks Lance for showcasing me! Thanks a lot!! hahahaha!

Gary

BTW, I hope everyone that joined had a good time and learned something new and helpful.

Thank you all for showing up and making the class happen. We had about 8 people total which was just about right for Matt to take the time to coach us individually. And for those that don't know, Matt has USAC 1 coaching credentials.

It was a fun class that went by too fast. Also, the rotating paceline was cool to learn. I'd never done that before. And Lance, I'm only 9 years behind you with two girls, a 7yo and a 5mo old. So I may be seeing 84yo really soon to keep you company!

BTW, we had only a handful of mishaps. Andy was the winner of th e"first" award going down in the parking lot when we were doing handling drills. Then the other Gary (aka O_o) took a nice tumble in the dirt but came out in pretty good shape. And of course yours truly... while trying to clip in going up hill I lost momentun and fell over! Once on the first S turns we tried and once after flatting going up those hills right after that first S turn area!! Sheesh! I've only been riding since Feb of 2006. Can I still call "Newb" mistakes? Probably not... Ugh!!

But thanks again to all that were able to make it. If you guys are intersted in another class of the same things or if you have any other ideas feel free to let me know and I can contact Matt again to set up another class. Maybe we can emphasize climbing since we ran out of time before really getting into it. Or ? I'm game for almost anything. Plus who else is going to keep Lance company in the back up those hills and be the subject of BF's Funniest Home Videos?!?!

Gary

Hey Gary... lucky your spill wasn't on film or else Lance would have posted it! hehe!

I finally saw the vid... wow, I turned in way too early, corrected, (aside from the other mistakes) scared the crap out of everyone, and got through the turn! hehe!

I'm a Cat 9 racer.. I have 9 lives of a cat! haha!
