Info on route from lake merced area to woodside?
Does anyone have route info to go from the lake merced area to woodside? I think the rules for biking on skyline have changed and I have to take some detours onto side streets? Mainly confused how to get to sawyer camp trail. Thanks for the help.

I'm not aware of any rules changes to riding on Skyline? What kind of changes have you heard about?

Can't find it now but I read something about bicycles no longer being allowed on the section of skyline from westmoor to hickey.

Here is a route from Palo Alto to Lake Merced and then the SF Caltrain station. It avoids the freeway section of Hwy 35 between Hickey and Westmoor.

That looks like a good way to avoid the freeway interchange. That interchange is risky when the fog is real thick, which it often is along Skyline.

From the Great Hwy:
- RT onto Westmoor Ave
- (0.05mi) LT onto Skyline Dr
- (1.27mi) Left onto Gateway Dr.
- (0.72mi) Left onto Hickey Blvd
- (0.14mi) Right onto Skyline Bld.
From Lake Merced to 92/Canada Rd, it's exactly 21.4 miles, 1,759ft climbing. To Woodside you just need to add 7.3 miles, 319ft climbing
Here are a couple of routes that can help:
San Francisco To San Mateo
Hope this helps
Angel.

I live in this area and yes.. fog can get really bad. Make sure you have your lights turned on so cars can see you (if possible).

Found my mistake, recollection of a ba.bicycles post was incorrect. I've ridden from sf to san bruno ave. and from sawyer camp to woodside. So I'm wondering if there's any confusing parts between san bruno ave. and sawyer's camp? But I will give the westmoor detour a try, I remember those interchanges were a little scary.

I mentioned this on the SVBC list....
This section of 280, to Milbrae, used to be open to bicyclists earlier this year. Of course, I agree with Mike -- there's no signs telling cyclists which way to go along this route. In fact, only after riding north to San Francisco several times did I learn that segment of the 280 shoulder was open: previously I'd navigated the maze Mike described, doing the best I could to stay uphill (ie left), avoid "slipping off" the ridge...
However, last month I noticed the sign had been changed: "bicyclists" added to the list of forbidden modes. I assumed it was in error, but then the "bicyclists must exit" at the Milbrae Ave exit was gone, as well: obviously not needed, since bikes weren't allowed there any longer.
The 280 segment between Skyline @ Larkspur and the northern segment of Skyline was still open, however. The San Andreas trail is a good alternative, although finding it going north can be rather challenging.
The whole Skyline route, especially northward, is far from relaxing. Skyline over 1, for example, in Daly City, is a nasty interchange, especially in the not-uncommon fog.

Ah... My backyard.
If you're heading south...
Skyline turns into 280 south of San Bruno Ave. You have two options:
1) Stay on Skyline/280 and ride along the freeway shoulder
for a short bit and exit at the next exit (Millbrae Ave/Larkspur Dr).
or
2) Hop onto the San Andreas MUP and ride that until it ends up at the
exit (you'll be on Larkspur Dr.).
You'll cross under the freeway (on Larkspur) and make an immediate right
onto Skyline drive. Take Skyline till you get to Hillcrest Blvd. Here you have three options.
1) Turn right onto Hillcrest Blvd then take the on-ramp onto 280. Ride along
the shoulder of the freeway till you get to the very next exit, Trousdale Dr.
Cross under the freeway and continue on Skyline Blvd till you get to Black Mountain
Road/Hayne Rd. Turn right on Hayne Road and continue till you connect back up with
Skyline Blvd. You'll eventually meet up with the southern Sawyer Camp Trailhead and
92 a little further south.
2) Continue straight on Skyline Blvd. Make left turn onto Millbrae Ave then an
immediate right onto Vallejo Dr. Continue till you can make a right onto Hunt Dr.
Turn right onto Trousdale to meet back up with Skyline.
The rest is the same as #1.
3) Turn right on Hillcrest Blvd, go past the 280 south on-ramp, and meet up with the
northern Sawyer Camp Trailhead. Take Sawyer Camp Trail all the way to its southern end
and join Skyline Blvd there.
Once to get to 92/Canada Rd. It's cake all the way to Woodside.
*** Riding on the freeway shoulder isn't bad as the shoulders are very wide,
but there is a lot more road debris. I don't usually use the freeway shortcut
unless I'm running late to get home.

The bicycles prohibited sign went up, then came back down. I heard something about a temporary restriction due to construction, but it's just as likely someone from Caltrans just decided to prohibit bikes but was then corrected - there was a deal cut when 280 was built that bicycles must never be prohibited from that section. At least that's what I heard.
The 280 section is fine, the hardest part is the exit because then you are on a narrow shoulder with traffic coming at you blind.

No prob. I ride south from San Bruno Ave pretty regularly so if you're riding one of these days maybe we can meet up.
