Rant ... Get it Off Your Chest

I figure this would be a good place to just blow off some steam ... so I'll start.

Track cycling??? It doesn't exist. It's not an olympic sport. There is no entertainment value in it. It is not worth the time and effort for NBC to cover it either online or on TV. And yet, Archery will draw more attention and is more entertaining? What a bunch of crock!

I'm missing Wiggin's burn up the track. Missed GB take the team sprint ... and I'm probably not going to be able to see team pursuit, which, if you haven't seen it, is like artistry. No Madison, and no Keirin. Why are we being punished???

NBC also feels the need to cover fencing ... and lots of it. Boooooring .....

what's funny is that matt laurer from the today show was at the velodrome goofing around with the us sprinter. That was your coverage.

But at least you can see replays of it, over and over and over, in the streaming media section in cycling. They have no streaming media coverage of track cycling.

I was looking forward to seeing Sarah Hammer tear up the track in the 3000m Individual Pursuit ... but it looks like she had a rough start. Nerves, I think. Hopefully she'll do well in her first heat.

Another one... shooting?!? Seems more like a skill than a sport. Although, I'm sure that if one were shooting continuously for hours on end, fitness might become an issue. And, trampoline? I'm sorry, but when I first read it, I kept thinking about the closing scenes of the Man Show

Try it sometime, you might think differently. I competed at the state level for quite some time, and can tell you it is more physical than you might think. There is a lot of conditioning that goes into winning a match, and controlling your heart rate is paramount for a successful shooter, not to mention extreme mental discipline.

FWIW, I haven't seen any shooting coverage on TV, and what archery I've seen I've enjoyed tremendously. Personally, I could do with less beach volleyball and swimming, but that's just me...... >bleh<

The only cycling event I saw so far was some sort of track event where 2 guys went round and round endlessly on opposite ends of the track, until one was declared a winner. >snooze<.

I've only been to a range twice in my lifetime. The last time, with just handguns, after about a couple hours and a few hundred rounds expended, my arms and shoulders were fatigued and my results deteriorated. I have no doubt it takes a lot of skill and requires fitness to be able to maintain that skill. I guess it's one of those better first hand than as a spectator event. Now, "team shooting" or "competitor elimination" shooting would be interesting. The last three standing would make the podium .

Errr, what's your point? Have you ever tried fencing? It requires a heck of a lot of instant judgment and reflexes to be good. Just because you can't appreciate it doesn't mean it's not a sport.

Cycling gets some coverage every year during the Tour de France. Fencing and shooting gets nothing unless the Olympics roll around and unless we happen to be in medal contention.

I use to see the folks on the Olympic kayak and canoe team on the Potomac near Bethesda and I feel sorry for them. They get absolutely no coverage even on streaming video. At least we got to see both time trials streaming.

I mean if you're going to ***** about the coverage why don't you complain about under 23 soccer games (which is stupid) or tennis or basketball? All mainstream sports that suck up time and don't even have any compelling story lines (except the made up US one). Or why we're forced to watch women's softball when there's no other competition in the world. I can't wait till they get baseball and softball out of the Olympics, that's the true waste of time. Why even have tennis when we have 4 majors every year....

Indeed, the Fifa World Cup is the biggest sporting event on the planet bar none. Why bother having the same sport in the olympics.

Tennis and basketball have their own world champs (or similar) so they should be gone as well. At least Baseball and Softball can be considered minor sports in that they are not played everywhere.

Also, why all the different swimming events such as backstroke, breaststroke etc... Swimming should just be the fastest stroke. You don't see them have races in athletics when they run backwards or on their hands (though triple jump, hurdles, and steeplechase should go as well).

Maybe they should make the olympics amateur again.

Trampoline actually takes a whole lot of power and skill for someone to be competitive in it. These guys/gals can go as high as 32' in the air on a trampoline. Stamina also plays a big role because of all the jumping and the body takes a lot of stress from all that compression when the athlete lands back on the trampoline. Done right, a trampoline will leave you breathless and tired just like running or cycling.

I'm with you on that one. Even though I love the shooting sports, it doesn't translate well as a spectator event.

Lots of interesting comments on this thread.

I got to see decent coverage of the men's tt, road race, and a little of the women's road race & tt. No real complaints about the men's, not enough of the women's. English soccer started this morning, so no chance yet to review the track cycling that recorded last night.

Speaking of soccer, the men's tournament is lame. Bad timing, too, as it comes at the start of the European calendar. Wouldn't hurt me at all to see it go away. The women's tournament, on the other hand, is as big as the women's world cup, so it needs to be supported.

As for all the other sports I don't normally watch, like swimming, gymnastics, diving, fencing, shooting, rowing, I love that's there's one major event every four years where the "odd" sports get their coverage. For example, watching the gold medal match in women's saber was very cool-lots of slo-mo fun with the dvr. But more than once every four years, no thanks.

As a hard core soccer fan, I can remember the days where coverage in the US was "Soccer Made in Germany" for an hour every week on PBS, and the World Cup on Univision in Spanish. I totally understand how those folks who follow the less popular sports feel. Once every four years, those folks deserve good coverage. I can't complain about NBC giving some other sports the love.

Guess it helps I have 8 channels broadcasting the Olympics with my cable package...

I just watched the nbc videos for the trampoline event and it does look like it requires a lot of power and dexterity, attributes I'm in dire need of, but it just doesn't work for me. Just my opinion of course. On a side note, looking at the details of this event, there are only five countries competing with one man and one women from each. Gotta love your chances of medaling if fortunate enough to make that olympic team.

Don't that just figure. I shoot a bow, I (used to) fence, and I ride a bike. For years I've watched the Olympics, and never seen ANY archery or fencing. This year, I don't watch the Olympics, so what do they show?

Archery and Fencing. Don't that just figure.

BTW, maybe they don't show track cycling because somebody watched a "Sprint", and all it seemed to be was two people in skin suits doing trackstands and staring at each other!
