Mt Tamalpais Hill Challenge Training Ride
We started out from the Golden Gate Bridge in pretty cool and foggy weather. I don’t particularly care for the east side of the bridge. It seems to amplify my vertigo, so needless to say we made record time getting over and down to Sausalito. (I think I could drop Lance A. any day of the week when it comes to getting over that bridge “El rapido!”)
Only a handful of Bike commuters passing us from the opposite direction and the tourists obviously hadn’t received their morning wake up calls in their respective hotels. (Give it time…we’d pay on the way back!)
We continued up through Mill Valley to the easy Throckmorton switchbacks, then we hooked on to Molimo and a bit of traffic. Panoramic Highway was pretty enjoyable. The sun was in a duel with the fog and created a nice scenic background for our climb. It was time to water up and take a breather at Pan Toll Ranger station.
We chatted with some good ole boys from the Carolina’s / West Virginia, taking in a Mt Tam hike as part of their all boy vacation. I didn’t hear any banjo music, so I felt pretty safe at that point.
I was cooling down and it was getting mighty chilly so we shot the down hill to Stinson. After a quick refuel Tim went into Terminator Race mode and I hung on for the few miles before the course climb. I sure felt better than I did last Saturday! I had some leg power, even for a nice sprint out at the end. Of course Tim kicked my butt…I was still happy with my time and when I got home I immediately signed up for the race. I’m hoping Tim can get in at least in the public category…I think the dude has some real potential. He may be racing officially with a local team who I won’t mention, but I’ll let him announce it when feels it’s time.
Cheers, and I’m back up the mountain tomorrow with some of the NorCal’ers for some off road! Unfortunately my 700X35’s were too wide, so it’s standard fare for wheels tomorrow! : (

Hey I think my friend Mike saw you crossing the bridge on his way into work... around 8am or so?
He's really itching to get a road bike and take on Mt. Hamilton again. He was really disappointed that he turned around on the mountain bike.

Pete,
Thanks for the report. Glad to hear you'll be at the race.
I know you guys have an east bay ride planned next Sat, but I plan on doing a race simulation on the course next Sat (the 20th). I'll be leaving from the SF side of the GG at 7:45 AM and meeting a few guys in Mill Valley at the Depot at 8:30 for the ride over to Stinson.
Anyone is free to join us.
Yeah Tim, what team are you joining?

Ah, Tamalpais, my one remaining piece of the mountain triad. I took a quick jaunt over it on the motorcycle a few weeks ago, but as of yet, no pedal-powered ascent.
You know, he could stick to the mountain bike and get better enough at it to be That Guy. You know, the guy who looks like a casual rider on an inappropriate bike (mountain bike on the road), but still seems to be passing you and leaving you behind...

Yeah...... rhymes with snoring spouse.
I'm still on the fence a bit. Got to make sure the insurance and all that is in order. I'm out of luck in my line of work if I, God forbid, break an arm or collarbone. I'm also wondering if it's going to fit in with my non-9 to 5 lifestyle. I'm excited to give it a shot though.
Hey Pete you forgot to mention my spill on the way down from Pan-Toll. I pulled a Ricky Bobby coming out of another hairpin turn. This one was in slow motion. I think I hit the dirt at about 5mph. I think I have "The Fear"

Hey, thanks I'm going to go for it...I need the practice. I'm gonna take a rain check on George's ride. I hate to do it but I need that last shot of confidence to go into this thing...See you there.
