Tour of Ca Volunteers

I recently checked the web site, and they have posted the application to volunteer for this epic stage race. This year, I'm volunteering, and maybe, see some of it too. Anyone else?

Just like last year, I'm taking the entire week off, but this time, helping out. Haven't decided what yet, though.

I filled out the application online a little earlier. The chance to be anywhere near such awesome athletes makes me as giddy as a school girl. I'm disappointed the time trial is in Solvang. I really wanted to see it but that's too far away for me.

Oh yeah, I put in for course marshal, medical control, and site decoration/restoration.

Yeah, but in my opinion, it's worth the trouble to make the trip down. It was so awesome. I got this shot of Vandevelde.

Yeah, he's a class act. And just to think I shot this with only my point and shoot digital cam.

PM me your email address and I'll send you the original res version.

I'll also be working the event this year as I have since it's inception. I've always worked Medical control so I have a few signatures of riders like Floyd, Levi, Robert Gesink, George. The real position that I wanted was one of the 75 touring course marshals but those are picked by the tour sponser AEG.

"Dear Volunteer,

Thank you for your interest in the 2009 Tour of California. The
Sacramento Sports Commission has received your contact information from
the AMGEN website and you are now a registered volunteer for the overall
start of the 2009 Tour of California! As we approach the February 14
event date we will be sending information via email regarding your
specific role and responsibilities for this event, so please add this
email address to your approved sender list. Please be aware that 90% of
the positions to be filled are as a course marshal. All other positions
are very limited, and filled on a first come, first served basis. If
you are unable or unwilling to be assigned as a course marshal, please
let us know via email to SSCVolunteer@cityofsacramento.org.. Please
note that all volunteers must be age 18 or older.

Please note that we assign volunteers at the Sacramento stage only.
This does not include any positions in Davis or surrounding areas.
Also, all 7-day traveling marshal positions have been filled. If either
of these things affects your ability or willingness to volunteer, please
let us know via email.

We are still looking for willing volunteers to assist the Sacramento
Sports Commission with this event so if you are aware of anyone who
might be interested please refer them to www.amgentourofcalifornia.com
to sign up. Thank you again for your interest in volunteering and we
look forward to working with you on this exciting event.

Respectfully,

Gail Keeter

I applied it help out in Santa Rosa. Just kind of funny they don't ask your occupation for some of the volunteer spots! I applied for Medical control and Security and something else. Well my previous experiences in the Coast Guard from being on a cutter have expanded my IT job skills to include EMT and Boarding Officer (Security/law enforcement). So would you think that might help them make their choice?

Just a little clarification on the 80 traveling Course Marshals we use. Yes, they are among the most coveted positions for the race. No, they are not selected by AEG. We maintain a database of several hundred people that have been CMs at the ATOC, ToM, and TdG. By and large, the selections are made by our Course Marshal Director.

I've been assigned to be a course marshal at the intersection of Mission and Tuscany in Santa Cruz. I can't wait to see them zip by.

I'm also doing a course marshall but assigned to driveway duty somewhere in town. I'll find out what I'm doing in San Jose come Saturday.
