MS 2009 Charity Ride: Truckee, CA Sept 12-13
Anyone planning on doing the MS Charity ride in Truckee this Sept? Oops in title i meant Sept 12th-13th.
Preparing for this is my training goal this spring/summer season, i want to be able to complete it in a respectable time. I know this ride will be a challenge for me. ≈140 in 2 days.

Have you ever at least driven the course? What is it like? Rolling with a few climbs or all hills, mostly flats????
I plan on taking a trip up there and AT LEAST driving the course once this summer.

There's a little bit of climbing, then some more, then some more after that, then you turn around and start back over all the hills. Then there's the second day.
I drove SAG for two years. The last year they started out of Northstar, went down to Tahoe, then south along the west side to Emerald Bay, turn around and head back. About halfway back climb up to the top of the ridge on the west side of the lake, then come back down, come back to the river out of Tahoe, and follow that back to Truckee. turn right in Truckee and ride back to Northstar.
Day 2 was going throught Truckee and along the road by Donner Lake. Climb from the lake level up tp Donner Pass. Head east on that road almost to the end, and turn around and climb, climb, climb, back up to Donner Pass. Go back to Truckee and then to Northstar. All this at high altitude.
It might be better to take a weekend and ride some of the course.

Yea i think so... I am not a great climber, well not yet. I think alot of Mt Tam climbs are in my future! That and alot of hill repeats up Mecham (start at 8% ends at 15% about 1mi long)

It looks like they changed the route last year. They went around the lake clockwise. That's a killer climb coming up from Emerald Bay. Unless you're a good climber, I'd think about changing your rear to a long cage MTB derailer and an 11-32 or 11-34. Work on spinning up grades. Also, you're at a much higher altitude, so work on your cardio. If you run that will work well.

Well it looks like they opened a ride closer to me (actually it comes within 2 miles of my house) Waves to Wine.... same day too. Starts in San Fran at USCF and Ends at lake Sonoma.

That's been around for a while. Transportation is tougher on that one, since they don't do a loop every day. Driving up to Tahoe and staying the weekend is "spensive" for me, so I was thinking about helping out for Waves to Wine if I'm off that weekend.

Well it actually works out better transportation-wise for me. I live in Rohnert Park and that is where day 1 ends, so i can sleep in my own bed, now getting to the race first thing in the morning is a bit of a drive, so i will likely get a hotel for the night before. On day 2 when the race ends, my wife LOVES Lake Sonoma so we are there all the time anyway, not a big deal for her to pick me up.
