Three Bears Question (Golden BearAthlon triathlon)
Can anyone tell me if the finish for the bike portion of this triathlon is at the top of Papa Bear? Here is the description from the website (www.trifreak.com)
Thanks!
BIKE by Mileage
Turn right at Lake Anza Rd 0.23 miles, Sharp left at Central Park Dr 0.36 miles
Turn left at Wildcat Canyon Road 0.61 miles, Slight left at Wildcat Canyon Rd 2.84 miles
left to stay on Wildcat Canyon Rd 4.35 miles,Turn left at San Pablo Dam Rd 5.32 miles
Turn right at Castro Ranch Rd 10.73 miles, Slight right at Alhambra Valley Rd 13.0 miles
Turn right at Bear Creek Rd 15.71 miles, Finish Overlook Staging area 22.76 miles
Athletes will exit out of the Lake Anza parking lot, make a sharp left at the Merry -Go- Round onto Central Park and another left onto Wildcat Canyon Road. Riders will follow Wildcat Canyon Road approximately 4 miles to the park exit at San Pablo Dam Road and turn left. IMPORTANT: the final mile on Wildcat Canyon Rd., before reaching San Pablo Dam, is steep and winding with a more than a few very dangerous turns. Be aware and SLOW DOWN!! Athletes continue on San Pablo Dam Road (aprox. 5.5 miles) to Castro Ranch Road and turn right. Stay on Castro Ranch (aprox. 2.25 miles) to Alhambra Valley and turn right. After (aprox.) 2.75 miles on Alhambra Valley riders reach Bear Creek and turn right. After (aprox.) 7 miles riders will arrive at The Briones Overlook parking lot, Transition Area 2. Turn right into the lot, dismount your bike., yell out your race #, rack your bike, yell out your race # again, get your T2Bag if no one has handed it to you yet, change into your running gear, bag any biking gear you are leaving behind, and RUUN!
Thanks!

I believe this is after the summit of Papa Bear, on your right while your are descending. I think it's the gravel road about halfway down the descent. Could be wrong, though.

7 miles from Alhambra Valley Road... sounds more like it's after the bears. There's a pretty big staging area just a half mile from the other end (Camino Pablo). I'm pretty sure it's at the south end of the reservoir there.
Bear Creek Road end to end is just over 8 miles.

Thanks- you guys are the best. I am planning to pre-ride the course with a buddy from SF who is doing the tri and I want to know where the bike finish is. He then has to run 10k on the trails of Tilden! And the first part is a 0.9 mile swim in Lake Anza (two loops, apparently). Should be a pretty course!

This sound like it would be the most plausible location - since the lot was called "Briones overlook" that location would still be high enough and close enough to the Briones reservoir (above San Pablo) to make sense.

Sounds like a blast... I used to be a pretty good swimmer. I placed in all 4-events in counties during my senior year of HS (although that was when I lived in a lame ass county in FL).
I've always wanted to do a tri, but two things have precluded me:
1) The cost - those events are expensive!!!
2) Running - even though I ran track in HS (hurdles), distance running was never my thing.

Yes, the Briones Overlook parking is on the right side after the summit. It's probably around 1/4 to 1/2 after the small summit. The lot is quite large so there's no way to miss it. It is before the dirt road that goes to the dam.

Thanks guys. I would be a little scared to ride down Wildcat with a bunch of crazy triathletes trying to stay on their aerobars and fly down the hill. Aren't most triathlons pretty flat courses? Hopefully the riders have enough experience on steep, twisty roads to manage it safely!
