Mountain Biking in the Bay Area
Most people here seem to be roadies, but anyone have any mtb trails to recommend. So far I've only heard of pleasanton ridge, as that is the closest descent trail in my area. Not looking to do anything extreme, just some nice trail riding to start me out on mountain biking. I have a nice dual suspesion ride that I want to get scratched up and dirty finally. Be nice to see some hybrid trails as well. Let me know if you guys got any ideas, and if you'd be willing to share your mapmyride routes, or gpx files as I recently acquired a 305.

You can go to the following site if you have a 305 and register free and download other MTB rides in your area.

I know of a couple places in the Santa Cruz Mountains where I used to ride when I had a mountain bike. Soquel Demonstration Forest and Saratoga Gap were a couple of my favorite places to go.

Redwood, Joaquin Miller, Lake Chabot, Morgan Territory, Sunol, Las Trampas, Garin, Briones... the list of decent places to ride in the East Bay is a long one!
The places I included vary in terrain and skill level. I recommend you do some exploring using the topo maps found at the entrance gates. Or d/l and print your own - https://www.ebparks.org/node/62
Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay (BTCEB) is a good place for more info - https://www.btceb.org/

I love this forum, but you're right, most people here do ride road. You should get a great response from the NorCal forum on www.mtbr.com. Obviously the riders there are mainly mountain bikers, though a lot of us ride road as well (myself included). I don't know the Bay Area very well, having only ridden Rockville and Annadel (INCREDIBLE, btw), but there are a lot of Bay Area riders there that know the trails and areas to ride in full detail.

I just did a great mountain ride today in Oakland- Redwood and Joaquin Miller parks. Tell us where in the Bay Area you are if you want more specific info. Marin is probably the most famous area for mountain biking. China Camp and Tamorancho in particular are good. The forums at mtbr.com are more focused on mountain biking. The best way to learn the trails is to ride with others who know their way around.

+1 on mtbr.com (hey nachomc!) When it comes to mountain biking trails, my favorite is my hometown trail system Water Dog Lake Park in Belmont. Nothing really epic here, but there are a lot of different trails and trail heads you can link together to create a loop of almost any size and difficulty. The Mid-Peninsula Open Space District also has a ton of great parks and trail systems in San Mateo County, most of which are open to bikes and accesible via Highway 1 (Skyline), including Russian Ridge, Skegg's Point and Purisima Creek Redwoods. The trials on Skyline are great because although there is often a lot of climbing, you are treated to magnificent views of the ocean, bay and sometimes both at the same time!

Annadel and Tamarancho are both pretty darn good.

The problem with the East Bay and many spots in Marin is that bikes aren't allowed on singletrack in a lot of areas. It's really annoying.

If you want to come to the peninsula, we have Waterdog Lake Park with great singletracks in Belmont, and El Corte De Madera (Skeggs) up on Highway 35.

At the top of Coleman road in South San Jose area. Fire road that went up about an hours worth. Good grind, a couple technical spots. At the top of that was another road with huge roller coasters. Half way up the air clears and the veiw and breathing get better. Ride down was FAST.
