Montebello Road writings...

Does anyone know the story behind the marriage proposal on Montebello Road that has been partially blacked out?

About 4 miles up the writing on the road starts. First it says "Tamara" then it says LIEVELING (the 'LIE' part has been blacked out). A bit later it says "WILL", later still is "YOU" and finally up near the top the writing reads "MARRY ME?", which has been blacked out as well.

My crack research staff (okay, it's just me...) figured out that lieveling means "Darling" in Dutch and doesn't seem to be an actual last name. But it still might be. A friend an I were discussing this on Tuesday and would really love to know the story. I assume it's a cyclist because of the way it's done. And I'm not sure how long it's been there. I've only done Montebello twice this year (once in early September and once today)...

It always seemed like a silly way to propose - one word at a time spaced over the course of several minutes. By the time you get to "you" it's kind of clear what the rest of the message will be.

That. and the writings take far too long between. I was beginning to wonder where the "marry me?" was on the way up. I didn't see it until I was on my way down...

Saw that one. It would be funnier if it said

WILL
...
YOU
...
JUST KIDDING

Maybe parts of it is blacked out because Tamara said no, and was pissed the guy wrote that on the road?

I think Tamara said no and the guy went back and painted it over.

I thought it would be a fun way to propose, but perhaps I am an idiot that way.

I flaked out on the execution but I had the idea of painting next to it with DAN J CONNELLY WILL YOU MARRY ME before the montebello low-key this year.

Funny yet slightly concerning..
What if she was driving up.. started reading it.. and became a little distracted? not a whole lot of room for error on that road.
k, I'm paranoid.

I really think the best way to propose is:
1) Manage to buy a ring, even though you are together most of the time.
2) Borrow a couple folding bikes from a cool guy that happens to have a few extra
3) Go on a trip to Europe, riding bikes/trains through Sicily, Italy, Monaco and France
4) Propose to her somewhere in the hills just outside of Florence
5) Then... Enjoy lots of good food/wine, ride said folders up Alpe d'Huez, see 2 TdF stages, etc.. all as a newly engaged couple.

Just sayin'

But, you are right, it is usually a required step.

My husband hasn't even met my parents yet.

Hah!

I asked my soon to be father-in-law after the fact... It wasn't too nerve wracking: he's very hard of hearing, I'm rather quiet, and I asked over the phone (her parents are in Alberta). Her mom had to translate for me. She knew what was up already...
