Current conditions on Highway 1

Hello left coasters!

My brother and I fly out Thursday to San Fran and plan on biking down to Santa Barbara on a self-supported tour.

I've read a few stories in the news where Highway 1 suffered quite a bit of damage due to the recent storms.

My airfare is non-refundable so the trip is a go..

Can anyone tell me what we're in for in terms of riding conditions along hwy 1?

If this is not the appropiate forum - please let me know!

(I didn't post this in the touring forum as I'm really only concerned with riding conditions/higway 1 conditions)

Thank you
Matt

The section between SF and Santa Cruz is just fine. I don't know about points south.

Sounds like a great ride!

Thanks for the good news, SC!

If anyone has information for areas south of Santa Cruz - please let me know!

I'm having a hard time getting a full picture based on news reports.

Some news reports are saying that one lane is closed, some areas say the road is closed all together.

CALTRANS is the best source, right?

This highway information is the latest reported as of Monday, January 25, 2010 at 07:07 .

I think this would be your biggest concern as this part through Big Sur/Pfeiffer State Park burned all the way down to road level a couple summers ago, and the controls are probably in place because they're getting mudslides. Bring all your rain gear.

On the off chance that the notorious (or loveable, depending on your view) "Devil's slide" area just south of san francisco (in pacifica) is closed when you guys need to get through, give me a call at 650-255-2210. I'll be around here Friday and Saturday and i'll help you with either a place to wait it out or an alternative route. Once you get around that corner, it's smooth sailing all the way to Santa Cruz with basically no possibilities of landslides or anything like that that you might encounter further south.

The weather is supposed to be nice Friday and only light rain Saturday and they shored things up pretty well a few years ago so hopefully it'll stay open for you. But even a big traffic accident will close this stretch. Several times a winter... Bikes could probably get through anyway but you might run into a not-too-happy chp if you tried it. The tunnel will be complete in another year or so and then the existing highway will be turned over to non-motorized travel - until it completely falls into the ocean. I prefer to skip the devil's slide and go up and over the mountain on what's left of the pre-1937 route anyway!

Have a great trip!
