What happened to Cal Cycling?

I hadn't looked into it for a while so I was shocked when I visited calcycling.org today and was greeted by the following message:
Quote:
The Cal Cycling team is on hiatus for the 2009-2010 academic year. Check back soon for information on alternate ways to ride in the Berkeley area.
They're also not listed on the Cal club sports page. I emailed the club sports coordinator asking what happened.

Does anybody know what the deal is? I rode with them last August and didn't hear anything suggesting this. As a Cal alum I'm saddened by this and hope it wasn't due to lack of support.

From my understanding, Cal Cycling was put on a one-year hiatus by the university due to some "controversial" photos put up on facebook that eventually got into the hands of university administration. It was completely unnecessary for the university to take such action, and it has put all the other WCCC teams on edge. Anyways, things should be back to normal next year (I think).

Yeah, complete BS, and administration over reacting.

I received a reply which I will repost here:
Quote:
The Cal Cycling Team is currently serving a yearlong suspension for violating the Sports Club Alcohol Policy. As a Sport Club team facilitated by the Department of Recreational Sports, team events (including banquets) are considered to be DRY events; however, several individuals on the team made several short-sighted decisions that resulted in the entire team being suspended from competing as the Cal Cycling Team. The suspension will be lifted at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year.
The conjecture about facebook photos fits in with this information, though it may tell all or part of the story. Without knowing more details I can't say. They are pretty strict about clubs at Cal, both sports and student orgs. I was intermittently members of both the snowboard team and ski and snowboard club, and they both had bouts of suspension, though frankly it was over bigger issues than drinking (more like lawsuits).

I'll stay positive and support them when they return.

Sucks. That said, when will kids learn that university bureaucrats can log on to Facebook too?

And, that said, thank god there was no Facebook when I was at Cal.

Jeez, they should be banned. Not, but c'mon Facebook privacy options are your friend. Facebook 101 = understanding privacy setting options.

Rule number 1. When consuming alcohol with teammates, don't wear school kit.
