Don't hurt them knees, sonny! All that speciality bicycle gear and riding for mahles and mahles! Bah! Kids these days!
On a more serious note, I will not be attending due to a lack of:
1) a road bike
2)fitness

I'm not in it this year, but did pick up on this nice preview of the course on the NCNCA group:

Maybe try posting in the racing forum too?

I will be there in the 35+ 1/2/3 race. I love this course. It's my 2nd favorite criterium course after Nevada City.

The best place to really make a move in this race is the false flat block after the steep climb. Most people really slow down, and if you have anything left after the climb you can really take advantage and either move up or get away in in break.
Also, be sure to shift to a low gear before you make the left turn onto the steep hills. It's better to spin a little faster at the bottom of the hill and be in a gear you can finish the climb strong with, rather than get bogged down at the top of the hill and really slow down.
Good luck!

Thanks, i'll keep that in mind! Do you happen to remember what gearing you used when going up the steep street?

I've done it with a compact (50-34 front, 11-26 back) and was able to keep it in the 50 the whole time, usually climbing in the 50-23 or 50-26. I don't like cross-chaining, but it's better than dropping the chain.

For mere mortals, 50-28 will work if you have it. Keep spinning into and up the hill, shifting early and often so you're in the 28 before your cadence finally bogs down and you have to stand. I think that point was about halfway up the steep part for most laps of last year's Cat 4 race. Not a huge deal, but it was nice not having to shift the chainrings at all during the race.
