Death Ride - Who's In?

Two weeks to go. Who is signed up?

I told myself last year that I wasn't going to do it again this year. Then I had prostate cancer surgery three months ago and decided this would be a good carrot to get me back on the bike. My time trials on Diablo show that I'm as ready as I was last year so here I go.

Things I'll do different this year:

- Start spinning earlier - I powered my way through the Monitor climbs and used up my legs too early

- Meet up with my buddy at the bottom of descents instead of tops of climbs - I'm slower on the climbs than he is but much faster on the descents that he - we both ended up waiting, him at the tops and me at the bottoms - this way we are much better matched - worked for us over four doubles last year - that will save as much as 45 minutes

- I dumped all my gear off at my car before Carson - dumb - no rain gear when the cold rain started - I'll keep a thin raincoat with me this time

- Keep moving - I was wiped by Carson last year and stopped a lot after Picketts - moving slow is still better than fully stopped

Reading over the older posts on the DR it sounds like they start passing out stickers on the top of Monitor at 6:00am. Does anyone know for sure when they start?

I was not planning on doing this early in the season but based on my Sequoia century results I might be able to complete Death ride too.
I realized we have forced PTO whole next week so I could get ready and make this event but it's sold out already so next year now.

There are tons of tickets for sale on craigslist if you want in. Just picked up two for over half off.

thanks for great suggestion. I just looked and indeed see tons of ads asking for retail price ($105). I figure you negotiated a good deal so I should just follow along

It's a 4+ hour ride from my home in San Jose so I think I'll leave Friday afternoon and spend a night there. Where do people normally stay and eat?

I'll be there. Not sure I'm looking forward to it but I'll be there. I was out doing some Monitor loops a few weeks ago and there was still some good snow on the ground....it was BRISK.

I'm in. Looking forward to the all day climb fest. Anyone have extra room at Grover Hot Springs for 3 of us?

I'll be there. I'm a first timer & looking forward to it!
I'm taking the day off work & going up Friday. (Don't you need to pick up your number by Friday afternoon anyway?)

I haven't thought at all about clothing or food to bring. I was assuming there would be plenty of food, & I guess I'll just keep an eye on the weather, though I know it can be unpredictable up there.

There is a lot of food. Usual stuff, clif bars and whatnot. Cytomax I think was the drink of choice, perfect if you're into humming-bird food color & sweetness. (I'll be carrying very little food, and a lot of drink mix)

Unless you make arrangements with them in advance you have to pick up your packets by Friday at 7:00 pm.

Also be sure to remember to bring the paperwork they sent you in the mail. Without it they won't give you your number until after 7 pm and then you have to get in line with the 100+ people who forgot theirs or are trying to buy last minute no-shows.

thanks for all good advice here. I found my ticket on Craigslist and booked Friday and Saturday nights at Carson Valley Inn. Wife wants to come along but she can not get off work till 5pm and I need to leave earlier to pick up registration package before 7pm Friday. If any one can pick me up from West San Jose on Friday I'd really appreciate it.
I'll share the gas cost, etc.
