Dude - he was probably nodding to give you props for even being out there on a bike at all. Intentional rude looks are pretty rare, but misinterpreted looks are common.

I nod and smile to most of the folks I pass on the roads, and usually say howdy but I'll bet with the car traffic etc a lot of them might think I was a rude roadie like you describe when it's the complete opposite.

Unless he said something specifically rude to you, I'll bet you're over-reacting to what was a "good" nod.

Sorry if my perverse sense of humor doesn't translate well to the screen. That was my attempt at mocking asshattery, not emulating it.

Can we all just agree to nod at each other from now on? That would be great.

I used to wave at everyone and noticed that about half the people waved back. So then I'd be thinking "should I wave at this guy? Does he look like a waver?"

Then I started getting sick of taking my hand off the bars and waving every hundred feet on the MUP, so I stopped, but I'd feel bad if a guy waved and I didn't have time to wave back. So now I just nod at everyone, I figure that should cover it. As time goes on, my nods are getting smaller and smaller.

I wave at:

Joggers/walkers, especially elderly people
People wearing a back pack or pannier, especially when I am riding my commuter
People who aren't riding full carbon bikes and/or in a full kit, especially people who look like they're just out riding, maybe not yet in to the sport

Trying to perpetuate the idea that not all roadies are ****** bags.

When I'm on my carbon bike with my lycra kit, however, I just ride with my middle finger up

As I was crawling slowly up Kings Mtn last week, I was tempted to wave at the folks speeding downhill, just to mess 'em up...

I believe the proper roadie greeting is a very subtle lifting of one or two fingers from the drops. It could be that you missed it, being on a commuter bike and all.

Frame pump -> Spokes.

Watch the aforementioned jerk fly off of his sissy piece of carbon, and then watch it explode and disintegrate in a blaze of glory.

Problem solved.

It's true, but I get that treatment all the time. One of my bikes came from BD and the other is a Nashbar with no decals. I did start carrying a frame pump on the Nashbar last week, though.

Okay... what's the deal with the frame pump. Is that supposed to be dorky or something?
