Did I ride correctly? Fisherman's wharf, embarcadero/north point trolley tracks
Last week I did a route following the water around the outskirts of SF. Enjoyed the ride except for one part. It's been nagging at me if I was correct in the way I rode. At the intersection of Northpont and embarcadero where the trolley tracks begin. I just ignored the brick and trolley tracks to the right and kept on following the paved road. I was keeping up with the car in front of me, so I was going with the flow of traffic. But noticed I was the only bicyclist on the road. I passed numerous bicyclists on the trolley tracks riding on the bumpy bricks. It's been bugging me, should I have been on the bricks or was I okay?

Ya did good. Stay on the road with the cars. People assume that the trolley lane is safer since there are no vehicles. but riding on the trolley tracks is a hazard. I've seen many people crash when their front tires drop into the tracks and they lowside.

Thanks guys. Thought I did the correct thing at the time. But it was a little disconcerting being the lone cyclist in that lane and seeing all the other cyclists in another lane. They sure didn't look too comfortable, though .

Most of the other cyclists there are renting bikes and don't know where they're supposed to be. I also stay in the road, occasionally going onto the bricks to get around cars.

I always take a left on North Point - which has a good bike lane -to go around the crowds/tracks/cobblestones.

Same here, way faster, and though you don't stay along the water for that stretch, you avoid SOOO much hassle of the whole Fisherman's area. Hop back over on Van Ness to go back to the waterfront along Fort Mason.

That portion of the road is a ROW for Muni's rail vehicles only.
If you look at the street view someone wrote on the roadway "no bikes" right in front of the tracks in spray paint or chalk.

Tried out northpoint last week, prefer the route through fisherman's wharf. Caught too many stoplights and double parked tour busses.
