Deputy James Council cited as a counter-example

Here's a blog post directed to candidates for firefighter and other public safety jobs:

Despite his drunk/reckless driving record, James Council was probably

hired by the sheriff's department because his father was a deputy.

I wrote to Sheriff Laurie Smith a few years back and asked her to fire Mr. Council from the department, but strangely my advice was ignored and he has been kept on in an administrative role-without a car or gun-for the time being.

What I think people need to be vigilant about is that the department doesn't try to sneak him backdoor into his old job when memories start to fade. Frankly I believe if this individual had any class at all he would have resigned from the department out of shame and tried to do something else with his life (I did not favor a jail term for Council).

Make no mistake, public safety is our area is a big bucks job and we should be able to do better than the likes of James Council. Nepotism in government hiring rarely works out to the public's benefit.
