Rattlesnakes on the ARBT bike trail

Wow, I have never seen so many rattlesnakes in such a short period of time. Four in the last two days on the bike trail. Ran over one about 3' long an hour ago. It was stretched out in a shady area. Never even saw it. Must be the late spring/early summer that is bringing so many of them out

I haven't seen any yet! I was out this morning, but it was still cool. They like the heat.

They're on Diablo too - fun to poke with a stick.

I havent seen a rattler for about 10 years. Plenty of other snakes but no rattlers. I rode over a basking rattler in Big Basin once.

I rode past a couple of them last year on the ARBT. None this year.

Dang!
I'll have to watch out.
Just started riding the past couple months and my dog loves to play in the river.

This one was stretched out across the westbound lane yesterday. Had to do some hard braking to avoid it. It was in a shady spot.

I encountered one last weekend in Yosemite. It was making it's across the road that goes up to Mirror Lake - it was actually on the Tenaya Creek bridge. It wasn't big, less than two feet long. I walked right up to it to look at it, made sure it was indeed a rattler. The woman I was walking with was having a fit, she was sure I was going to be bitten! I stayed with the little thing until it was safely across the road, and warned other walkers (especially those with kids) that it was there. I finally continued down the road, and on the way, found a ranger in her truck and told her about it.

In all the years I've been going to Yosemite, that was the first time I have ever seen a rattler. Bears, yes. rattlers - no.
