Visiting San Francisco, would like to do a ride

Hey,

I'm from the Netherlands and I'll be visiting San Francisco next week for a conference (9/24 - 10/1).
Since I'm a big cycling fan I would like to do a ride (or more) there.

So my question, can any of you recommend me a place to rent a decent road bike?
Also, since I've never been there, what are the nicer areas to ride to?
Or are there any groups/people I could do a ride with, that would also be great!

Hope you can help me out here!

Thanks.

Aside from the ones mentioned in that thread, check out Big Swinin Cycles on Van Ness and Sports Basement in the Presidio.

Glad you are visiting SF, for Road Bikes rentals check the Sports Basement in the Persidio http://community.sportsbasement.com/rentals/bike/ . Close to bike paths and the Goldengate Bridge. For routes check MapMyRide and search San Francisco http://www.mapmyride.com/site/search...ancisco&search= . Also there are several group rides leaving from San Francisco on the weekends. Most start at the Sports basement Parking lot, ussually around 8:00 AM then 8:30 then 9:00 most go over the Goldengate Bridge and into Marin County where the are less cars and great roads. Have fun you can't get lost there are lots of cyclists around and they are all helpful. Oh you if are going to rent a bike my suggestion is to bring your saddle, pedals and road shoes the guys at the shop can install them for you and remove them so you can get a free fitting on your rentabike (I think the shop mechanic told me the Sports basement is renting the either the new Felt or Cannondales) Have fun see you on the road - Phil

Roy, you will be disappointed with the bike culture here. It's nothing like the Netherlands or Denmark. However, if you come here for what SF has to offer you will love this area. It offers beautiful scenery like no others. I suggest riding along the Embarcadero starting from AT&T Park and head North to Golden Gate Bridge. And if you have time cross it and head over to Sausalito and take the ferry back if you run out of time or get too exhausted.

You can rent pretty good road bikes from Pacific Bikes in SOMA. If you're just after decent bikes, Bike and Rolls on Market St./Embarcadero will do.

Enjoy!

hey, if you want something a bit more challenging you should try either mount tam (there are plenty of maps online, "alpine dam loop" is a great ride), or an easier "headlands".. They're both right over the golden gate bridge.. These are suggestions if you like road riding and beautiful scenery.. Alpine Dam Loop takes you though amazing redwood trees, an awesome dam and resvoir, etc. pretty sweet.

oops. 2011. sorry all

Old thread but an often asked question. Are the older replies for bike rentals and rides still correct?

I'll be over in 3 1/2 weeks. Rides planned for the first days before heading East are -

Old La Honda Tunitas Creek loop
Sierra rd and Mt Hamilton + possibly fitting in South Gate Mt Diablo in the afternoon
Variation on the Alpine Dam loop
