RICHMOND (CBS SF) — A bicyclist was injured in a shooting in Richmond early Monday morning, and told police that he was shot by a sniper on a rooftop. No matter how bizarre it may sound, so far in the investigation police say they believe the victim’s story.
A train operator at the BNSF Richmond Railyard discovered the injured bicyclist shortly after 3 a.m., Richmond police said.
The 43-year-old man was standing near the train tracks with his bicycle when the engineer noticed him, and managed to stop the train, thinking he wanted to cross the tracks.
The engineer thought the long freight train would keep the bicyclist waiting for a long time.
But when he stopped the train, he discovered the bicyclist was bleeding, and he said he had been shot.
When police arrived, the bicyclist told them that he had been walking on the train tracks between West Cutting Boulevard and West Ohio Boulevard when someone sighted him with a laser from a nearby rooftop and opened fire, shooting out both of his legs.
The bicyclist managed to flee the area on foot.
He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, but his injuries were not life threatening, police said.
Police cordoned off the area and searched for the shooter but were not able to locate any suspects.

The real question is whether we're really calling Richmond San Francisco; I can live with calling a guy with a bike a bicyclist. But the geographic confusion would be like saying you live in Provo, or the OP in NYC.

If it's really a sniper, it's scary. Too many crazies out there. The 11pm news was not particularly helpful with details.

The fortunate thing is that where this happened is not exactly a major bike arterial. The odds of one of us being there at all, lt alone at 3:00 a.m., are about as close to zero as you can get without actually hitting it.
And for our out-of-the-area friends, thanks for your concern, but rest arssured that the city of Richmond is not San Francisco. Depending on traffic, it's 30 miles and at least one bridge (depending on your route) away. There is a Richmond District in SF, but that is a very different place. Richmond is, unfortunately, well-known as a place better avaoided, for the most part. Fortunately, the bad parts of town are off the beaten path for most cyclists. Not all, but most.
Actually, the Bay Area and surrounding area, taken as a whole, is God's Country for riding. Most drivers are civilized - not all, but most - the weather cooperates 7/8ths of the time, it's not hard to escape the urban areas and get into peceful countryside, and there is a huge supply of riding of whatever kind you want, road or off-road, hilly or flat, forested or wide-open. Plenty of good shops, plenty of sunshine, plenty of scenery.
And. It. Doesn't. Snow. Here.

Well, counselor..... has this been proven, or are we all operating on hearsay in conjunction with a vague attempt at reporting? 
I know this kind of activity would not exactly be a big surprise in Richmond, but still...... I'm not buying it just yet. And if there was an incident, it would be better classified as another random shooting in Richmond - I don't think anyone there would live up to the title sniper, in any true sense of the word.
The OP, being from Punsutawney, PA, would probably be better served by the headline:

It is true that the empircal data shows that, on any given night, there is a pretty good chance that someone will take a potshot at someone else in the City of Pride and Purpose (hey, that's what it says on their signs). What is scandalous and downright mean is your insinuation that the citizens of Richmond all drown their sorrows in Colt .45. That is an evil, vicious, unfounded stereotype.

With the corporate media stirring up anti-cyclist sentiment, look at the comments section on news articles about cyclists, cyclist rights, accidents, bike lane projects, etc... Many many times, I've seen commenters threatening to attack cyclists. You can just write it off as "venting" all you want, but when 50% of the comments are of this nature, it just validates the violent ones: "Hey, everybody else here feels this way too, so I'll just go up on the roof and pick off a few bikes."
