Maybe this is why the rest of the US hates us

Sunday, December 9, 2012. Hawk Hill at the top of Conzelman Road, Marin headlands. What a great day to be alive.

color matching frame pumps and big saddle bags were at one time, for some of us, associated closely with road bikes.

and by the look of the bend in the fork, that bike looks old enough to remember the nixon administration.

That's for me and yo' mama to know and you to find out.

Bigbossman loves to make fun of my "steamer trunk" . . . until I have the tool or gizmo to bail him out.

Close. It's a 1978 Eisentraut, so make that the Carter Administration. And it is decked out with Campy 10-speed. Mmmm, classic lugged steel with modern drivetrain, mmmmm.

Sigh. I fear you are right. 'Tis simply part of our burden . . . .

Holy headtube, Batman!

Otherwise, a gorgeous, drool-worthy ride. Love the contrasting bartape.

Chapeau on your impeccable taste, sir.

Thank you. It's hard to see in this photo, but the tape actually picks up the yellow lettering of the downtube decal (the only graphic on it, and in a lovely, unique cursive script). I will never claim to be a fashinista, but I have learned a thing or two along the way.

As for the headtube, don't forget that I am, and my bikes are, in the words of bigbossman, freakishly large.

the tire, too? Looks a little big for the bike... unless you have a friend with a fat bike.

I saw that the lettering and the bar tape were very close in color. I'm no fashinista either, but I do watch "What Not to Wear", and as a former dye processor at textile mill, I get it. It's very cool.

And btw, I get the "freakishly large." Remember, we've ridden together a time or two...I just like saying that phrase.

I don't care if you have a surgical kit in that saddlebag. It works for me. Carry on, sir.

Ahem..... that should be - freakishly large

I have a patent attorney in my pocket, and I'm not afraid to use it.

Idle threat. Everybody knows he spends his time in Death Valley sleeping in a van and watching scorpions do the "wind dance."

To be fair, some of us to the east realize that the view in ANY direction from the top of Hawk Hill is awesome, you really can't go wrong with a picture in any direction, only a stitched together 360 photo really comes close to capturing the Hawk Hill experience, and why spend the time doing that when you can be riding?

In any direction, however, the picture is improved when it includes a beautiful lugged steel road bike from the 70's.

That's the spirit!

I have done group rides with panniers so I could do some shopping on the way home. Lock on board and all. So that seat bag is nothing.

Meet Uncle Bambi.

He's a fixer. He fixes things. Need something fixed? Call Uncle Bambi. He'll fix it.

If Uncle Bambi is so good at "fixing" things, why do I have this premonition of my kneecaps breaking?

Kneecaps is an Irish thing.

I don't think Bambi ever broke a kneecap in his life. I don't think my 4th cousin Joe did either...... but he was pretty handy at fixing problems with an ice pick.

Kneecaps with bullets or, later, drills (hey, ammunition costs money) is an Irish thing. I thought kneecaps with a baseball bat, pipes or other blunt objects was more, how shall I say, ecumenical.

I think I'm glad I never knew Uncle Bambi. I know I'm glad I never met Cousin Joe; you have to be really committed to the project to "fix a problem" with an ice pick. <shudder>

For a button man, Uncle Bambi was kind of a shabby dresser.
