I've searched but couldn't find, are bikes and peds allowed in the tunnels or not? there are two wide lanes, one for regular car travel and the other a emergency stopping lane, plus a raised walkway.

"Each tunnel will accommodate a single lane of traffic, 12 feet wide, with an 8-foot shoulder on the right and a 2-foot shoulder on the left. The 8-foot shoulder will serve double duty as a place for stalled cars to pull off the road as well as for bicyclists to pedal through the tunnel."
Not clear if pedestrians will be allowed.

The old road is supposed to become a bicycle/pedestrian pathway as well. Does anyone know if that will be available immediately or is it going to be fenced off for a while until some improvements are made?

Bicycles are apparently allowed in the tunnel, but how safe is Hwy 1 north and south of the tunnel? Is this a practical route for bicycling between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay?

Prathmann Thanks! I missed that about bicycles, good news. I began to wonder though, do I want cars whizzing by me at high speed inside the tunnel, one swerve by a drunk or someone texting and it might be over. From what I heard on the news, all they have to do is post signs to divert traffic to the tunnels then the old Devil's slide will open for peds and bikes.

johnny99: I'll soon find out how safe the road is to Halfmoon Bay, that's where I want to go. Seems on Google maps, most of the road looks pretty fair.

The wife and I just rode it a few weeks ago. South bound the worst part as has been for at least the last 30 years is the climb from Pacifica up to the slide. Then the slide itself going south is fast, the road is bad and some places there's a shoulder and others there's not. There are lots of cars all the time. The further south you get on the slide the better everything gets.
So, I think that overall riding the tunnels will be safer than the old way with cars. But the most dangerous part, the climb out of Pacfica is unchanged.
I understand the old road is closed to all traffic now and won't be open to peds. and bikes for about a year. Even when it does open the first time the roadway falls into the sea I can't imagine they will fix it for bikes. They will just put a fence up at that spot and call it good.who ever thought building a road here was a good idea anyway?

Beats the heck out of me... I've lived in the area 35 years or so now, and its been a trouble spot all that time.

Checked out the brand-new Devil's Slide Tunnel. I was lucky to get a chance to ride through the south bound tunnel without traffic. I rode back on the sidewalk. Not sure if you can walk thru it. There is a sign that says maintenance use only. The cement barricades are up against the road as you exit the south side. There is no shoulder to safely ride in some sections. Hopefully the barricades will be removed in the summer after the new park opens. Good idea to have your rear blinky on in the tunnel. Ride safe!
