Help in route suggestion from SSF to SF-Thanks!

    Hi Folks,

I'm going to start biking from work from Foster City to San Francisco (Fell and Divisadero St). Although, I've never done this before and am NOT familiar with biking around SF at all. I have a route that takes me to SSF near Hillside Blvd (from there I can go toward DC). I'm looking for suggestions that will take me from Hillside to SF (Fell and Divisadero). I am not sure if I should be trusting Google Maps, and hopefully looking for suggestions from people who has ridden in the area (looking for safe routes). I am open for alternative routes as well.

    Thank you.

Have you tried Google maps? http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&gs...ed=0CAgQ_AUoAg Click on the bike icon for the route. Also you might contact the SF Bike Coalition for directions and they may be able to put you in touch with other bicyclists.

I heard in the past that Google maps cannot be relied upon, perhaps the maps are much better now and will give it try. Thanks for the headsup on the Bike Coalition.

Possibly stupid idea - but .. how about posting in craigslist's SF bike section? Craigslist anonymizes your email addresses, so your id is safe, and you may get some good, some bad replies - you can trace them on maps.google.com or drive those routes once. You can vary the start/stop points slightly for more anonymity.

I rode from SSF to Embarcadero last fall, taking the most straightforward route, Bayshore to 3rd (which is mostly what Google Maps is suggesting). Bayshore was OK, there was too much traffic for my liking on 3rd. Also, I think it's a sketchy area. Looking at Google Maps, I think I'd try Bayshore to Geneva to Alemany to San Jose to Valencia instead. Or maybe even Hillside to Alemany etc. etc.

Have you checked out this site:

    http://sf2g.com/index.html

This is a group of riders who commute from the city down to SV. I'm sure you can use their routes to guide you into the city.

    Good luck!

Thanks! Very helpful. I can incorporate what I have thus far with their route. Need to bookmark this site.

Yeah, I was going to suggest asking at SF2G too. They ride much of their route to Mt. View the same route like you do from Foster City. They have a Google Groups where they call out rides, ask there. Some of them start out very close to where your workplace is.

I finally mapped a route to and from work which I rode today. I still want to experiment with other detours to avoid some dicey areas.

Is it safe to ride Bayshore from Brisbane to Visitation Valley? Also, in SSF, is it safe to ride from Oyster Pt to Sister Cities? Shoot I prob drove there over a 100 times but can't recall if that section is bike friendly. Thx!

Oyster Pt to Sister Cities isn't a long distance but you have to cross the 101 overpass/junction, which is OK but not exactly enjoyable. Sister cities is a good little VO2max interval though.
