Just a note: It's going to be hot later in the day. Let's make sure we're ready to hit the road at 10, not show up at 10.

We had a great time, 11 riders in all and a great time was had by all. We had cool temps and light breezes by the water all day.
A really good leisurely lunch was enjoyed by all at Valona Deli in Crockett.

Bonus Feature: A sailboat race on the Carquinez straight that we saw from several different angles as we circled the entire straight.
http://app.strava.com/activities/59094817

Extra Bonus: The stronger riders in our bunch were super supportive of our novices.
You are all truly ambassadors for our great sport of cycling. Well done ambassadors!

I just wanted to say a great big THANK YOU to Lanceoldstrong and all who participated in this ride. It was my very first foray into the area surrounding the Carquinez Straits, and now I now what a treasure I've been missing. And speaking of treasures, I was very happy to make the acquaintance of so many fine riders whom I met for the first time today, and I'm even more pleased to learn that many of you are local to me. Let's please stay in touch and maybe plan some more rides together.

How about a repeat of this ride as soon as the Carquinez Scenic Trail is re-opened?

We beat the heat! In Antioch it was 106 by the car display as we drove home.

Here's a slide show of just a few photos.

^^ You're not gonna believe this, but I managed to mount my Contour on the wrong side. So not only are the frames upside down, but they're flipped left to right. I managed to find some freeware software that'll get things properly oriented, but it's Windo$e only so I've got to run it on my latop which is only slightly faster that a well lubed abacus.

So give me some time, and I should be able to get some video that doesn't look like it was shot by a Brit standing on his head.

How fun! And you found East St. Louis Toodle-Oo!

You do know that there are a bunch of gray parts that don't seem like your normal editing style.

Julie and I enjoyed your video a lot. Thanks for that. It was great to have you on the ride.
Julie said you were one of my above mentioned ambassadors. Many thanks for helping Julie feel very welcome.

Julie is always welcome. It's you we have concerns about . . . .

Glad to hear you all had a good time and that the weather cooperated. Meanwhile, I was melting in the Central Valley. A swing by Livermore Cyclery on the way home around 3:00 had the thermometer in my car registering 109*. Even walking from the air-conditioned car to the air-conditioned store felt like a stint in a blast furnace.

Hey, I just figured out why the Bay Area has those lovely cooling sea breezes - it's because the Central Valley sucks. (The valley, not the people.)

Got a better idea of the dates now:

On or before July 5, East Bay Regional Park District contractors will be begin rebuilding and converting 1.7 miles of Carquinez Scenic Drive into a hiking and riding trail between Martinez and the town of Port Costa.

The trail segment -- expected to open in fall 2014 -- will improve access to an often-overlooked area of hills, shoreline, natural parks and preserve south of the strait between San Francisco Bay and the Delta.

That is great news!! The Fall of 2014 would be a great time for a repeat of this ride.

BTW, I'm still working on getting my Contour video right side up and properly oriented left to right. I'm quite the novice at this sort of thing, so it's taking me a while just to get comfortable with the software. Since the storage on the Contour is formatted as FAT32, there's a hard limit on file size of 4 GB, so the ride is chopped up into 4 separate files, and I managed to completely trash the first segment. Bummer. The other issue I've run into is translating the native QuickTime format to a Windows Movie Maker compatibile format, then doing the 270 degree rotation, splicing the files together, and then integrating the Garmin data using Dashware brings this pathetic laptop of mine to it's knees. So.... Yesterday I upgraded the memory to 8 GB and cloned the existing system disk onto an SSD drive, which improved performance quite significantly. Baring any further data destroying brain f@rts, I hope to have something postable soon. I'll let y'all know when.

Aww dang...I wish I saw this post before. I woulda got together for that ride.

One thing I hate about that stretch of trail heading east to west is the amount of cracks on the road. You could definitely do some damage to your tire/rim if you arent paying attention.
