Classic Carquinez Course Group Ride: Before Road Closure

Saturday June 8th at 10:00 a.m.
Meet at Martinez Waterfront Park bocce ball parking area.
(Joe Di Maggio Drive next to/west of: softball field parking area)

Classic Carquinez Course: 23 miles, counter clockwise around the whole Carquinez Straight.
Featuring the no cars and soon to be closed for reconstruction, Carquinez Scenic Drive.
(We'll ride this stretch north to south so as to ascend the part with the worst road surface, safer this way.)

Other highlights include: bike paths across the Benicia and Crockett bridges, gorgeous homes and water views on historic K St. in Benicia and
a bike path through Benicia State Park.

Lunch at the very nice Valona Deli in Crockett at mile 14.

Slow Poke style, no drops.
Expert Guidance I have ridden this loop countless times
I will provide route slips for all.

Who is in?

I'd love to join you folks. Don't think I've ever riden with you even though I'm right next door in Pittsburg, and this looks like a fun ride. I think this would be a good opportunity to meet & greet. If that's OK....

From the 511 Contra Costa site, a 5/24/13 update:
"In mid-June/early-July, the trail/road will be blocked off by fencing to start construction."

So I think the 8th will be fine. We can punt and adjust the course easily, day of, if conditions change.

We'll be on another coast by then, spending a few days visiting family. Sure would be fun to do another BF ride again. Maybe later in the summer?

Midland's pics sure make it look death defying. It is not as bad as the pics make it look.
They show why I plan to lead us in the direction where we ascend this rough stretch.
I have descended it lots, but it is not so fun.
Thanks East Bay Regional Parks for fixing it up soon, and thanks to Contra Costa County for giving them the rigt of way.

I'm in for sure - might bring a friend or two with me. A MTB would be OK, right?
Does anyone have a MapMyRide or similar graphic route description?

Aww, no Lake Herman Road?

On the other hand, lunch at Valona Deli. Love that place.

Unfortunately, I will committed Saturday (no, not that kind of committed ) so I can't join y'all. Have a great ride.

LanceOldstrong is correct about Midland's photos. The photos give a good view of some of the sights, but the total distance of the unpaved single-track part around the washed-out section of road is 20 yards tops and plenty easy to navigate safely, and the other part where half of the pavement fell away and the other half remains is 5 yards at most and is easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy.

That is a nice road, a good steady climb, but K street in Benicia is shadier and right on the water. The homes there are architectural classics too.
You will be missed.

Ride Roster (so far)

bsektzer
cccorlew
MiLiPpony
Midland
DabloScott, possibly w/ a couple friends
LanceOldstrong (hey, that's me!)
Mrs. Oldstrong

Shaping up nicely.

Hey, just saw this. It looks great. I'll see if the wife wants to go. We're in San Mateo so would be driving up.
we've sailed under those bridges and along those shores many times. It would be cool to ride it.

Look for a dark blue Honda mini-van with a bike rack on top.
We will be driving this and it can be the rallying point in the parking lot tomorrow morning.

He'll be easy to spot in his "flamboyant" attire.

Dan, I'll leave it to you to explain this reference to the teeming hordes.
