Registration for the Sequoia Century opens today. Who's in? If you like hills, this is the best century on the peninsula. Registration is limited to 1300 people and they usually sell out.

It is. Climbing Tunitas Creek at 100miles into the metric route is good practice.

Being a member of Western Wheelers, I volunteer for SAG every year, and I do the Tunitas Creek Stretch. If you see a blue Corolla with a yellow Saris bones bike rack, that's me!

Sounds like they will be going in the reverse direction from the Pescadero RR.
Sequoia Century is always the first Sunday in June. Is the Pescadero RR on a different day this year?

Looks like they are definitely on the same day. And using Stage and 84 in opposite directions. Could be... interesting.

All they have is this for description: "descends Alpine Road to La Honda, continues to San Gregorio" So if they take 84 to San Gregorio then it wouldn't be an issue. If they take Pescadero/Stage, doesn't sound like it, then it's an issue.

Pescadero RR is taking Stage north between Pescadero and San Gregorio, then 84 to Alpine, then taking Pescardeo Road back to Pescardero, then circling back onto Stage. That has them going in opposite directions on 84, which shouldn't be a problem.

But the 200k Sequoia says this :
This challenge is 122 miles with 10,900 ft. of climbing. Follows the 100–mile route, and adds a loop from San Gregorio to Pescadero, then south to meet the coast at Bean Hollow Rd. before heading north on the coast.

That sure SOUNDS like Stage Road (in the opposite direction) since stage and highway 1 are the only ways between the two.

Last year was a tough route ( I did the 200k). It's not really stated on the site if they are using the same route. Start early is the bottom line.

Thank you for participating in the 2012 Sequoia Century on Sun, June 03, 2012.

Although the weather was perfect and the route beautiful, I'm afraid we fell short on a few items. In an effort to make the food more varied, we made some choices we should not have made and badly underestimated the needs of our riders. We're going to fix that. Next year, we plan to have bananas available at the start and at most rest stops. The chocolate milk was popular and we will greatly increase the supply. The same goes for roasted potatoes. We'll also address the issue of slow food service in La Honda. My staff had compiled a list of issues that need correcting. All are related to new locations and to new foods. We will do our best to address the issues by next year.

We really appreciate our riders, and had no intention of short changing them. We look forward to seeing you again.

I'm wondering what out of area riders are going to think of the fine repaving job done on Skyline. I've been thinking about loss of cycling habitat and if a golden age of cycling on the peninsula is coming to an end (maybe I'm just getting old, I dunno).

Are you suggesting that chip-sealing using what appear to be small boulders makes for a rough road surface? They didn't do it all that long ago and there are already small potholes between Old La Honda and Kings Mountain. Terrible.

We can only hope that they come back and do a better job sometime before the turn of the next century.

who is a very serious cyclist. He said a friend of his was determined to talk to an actual person at Caltrans about the situation on Skyline and was told basically that you must be joking if you think we consider cyclists before we embark on road maintenance.

In other words go pound sand or equivalent.

You know though, that pavement can't be good for cars either and must cut down on gas mileage at the same time.

I signed up months ago. And found out two weeks ago I have a business trip with a flight leaving Sunday at 4:35 P.M from SFO the day of. I'm starting from the base of King's (I live 10 minutes away on Jefferson) at 5 am and praying I make good enough time to finish the 200k without my wife having to pick me up with my luggage and some baby wipes. It's going to be brutal.

No, but I did motorcycle escort for the Pescadero road race which was running the other direction on Stage rd. Thanks to all the century riders who slowed down and moved over to let packs of racers through safely.

I was out there - did the 200k. First time on most of the roads thanks to this thread. Seemed like a good local event and fit into my ride schedule but some of the reports from last year had me wondering how it would be. Well, I really enjoyed it! The course was great, food was fine, well supported, weather perfect and I was happy with how I rode . No complaints from me...

I was planning on the 200k, but had to cut it short to catch my flight out. (Tip, do not ride 107 miles then get on a plane and sit for 5 hours) But I have to say, the volunteers were great, the food at the rest stops was about right, if not super inspiring (I didn't get to Pescadero to see if the garlic bread made an appearance! That stuff is MANNA FROM HEAVEN!) and there was mass quantities of everything. I didn't hit the end of the ride meal since I was so time constrained, I started my ride at 5 am at Robert's Market at Woodside around 5:20 a.m. and ended my ride at Robert's. (Plus the 6 mile roundtrip to my house and back.) I really enjoyed Redwood Gulch, and China Grade made me happy to have made it to the top without stopping. All the riders were pretty courteous, too. I met one Western Wheeler who had found a pair of armwarmers on the course and was making his way up the line asking everybody if they'd lost theirs. We chatted about my Surly Crosscheck a bit. He was the only other person I saw out there with a trunk on his bike.

Ah, that was Robert, right? On the Bianchi? He has good eyes - I saw those arm warmers on 236 as I went by and didn't identify what they were until I was past them.

I was planing to do only 100 miles , but my club mate wanted to do the full 200K. The route got us up close to the Pescadero Road Race action. Enjoyed the artichoke bread at the Arcangeli Grocery & Bakery Rest Stop. Saw the AIDS Lifecycle riders on there way to L.A. I finished the 120 miles in 9:12. 10,780 feet of climbing.
