Time to ressurect the SlowPoke Rides

A few years back, bigbossman and I put together a series of SlowPoke Rides. These feature reasonable paces, regrouping often, and lunch. Heavy on the lunch.

Well, tempus fuget, and the SlowPoke Rides went the way of the Mohicans.

Until this weekend.

Sunday, Feb. 23, meet at 9:30 at the Orinda BART Station ticket machines for a 9:45 rollout. I plan to go up Wildcat Canyon, through Tilden Park staying on Wildcat (I am not a fan of going up Shasta) along Grizzly Peak/Skyline, back down Pinehurst, into Moraga and back along Moraga Way to Orinda BART. I think it comes to somewhere around 25 to 27 miles. Yes, there are climbs, but there are also fun descents, pretty roads and some great views of the Bay. Lunch either at Bianca's in Moraga or Europa in Orinda, as the mood strikes us.

This is not meant to be a fast ride. (As some of you know, I simply don't do fast on uphills.) In fact, I gurantee it will be a slow ride - that's how we roll in SlowPoke Ride Land. But it should be fun.

I know it's short notice, but what the heck - it's not like you have anything better to do, right?:D Let me know if you are coming so I know to look for you at Orinda BART.

the hardest part will be getting to Orinda Bart by 9:30!

Lanceoldstrong 02-18-14 09:54 PM

I wish I could come. I have plans (non-cycling) with Julie for that time on Sunday or I would be there.
Any Slow Poke with you would be a howl, a lost battalion of platonic conversationalists on incomparable streets.

cccorlew 02-18-14 10:40 PM

MyLilPony and I are highly likely.

danec99 02-19-14 04:26 PM

Tempting, and in.

And what activity with Julie could possibly be more important than riding with moi? Oh, that's right, pretty much any and all such activities . . . .

Looks like there will be five of us: danec99, hueyhoolihan, cccorlew, MyLilPony and me. See you all in the morning.

Bigbossman is hunting pigs at Fort Hunter-Liggett and MarkoPolo is at a wedding in Seattle, so my please for them to tag along went for naught.

And if anyone else wants to join in, you're welcome to.

cccorlew 02-22-14 04:14 PM

Let me confirm (and in doing so bump this post)
MyLilPony and I will be there.

hueyhoolihan 02-22-14 04:30 PM

me too.

Wish I could have made it. Hopefully I will later on in the Spring or Summer.

Lanceoldstrong 02-23-14 08:36 PM

I played coy right up until show up time and then voila I made a surprise appearance.
I am glad I did. It was a great ride, great group and fine day out.
Thanks Bikingshearer for putting this together.

Yup, a fun ride with cccorlew, MyLilPony, dane99, hueyhoolihan and, surprise of surprises, LanceOldstrong, who rearranged his day to join us (thanks, Julie!). From Orinda BART, up Wildcat Canyon. About 2/3rds of the way up, our leading elements (which, since it was uphill, did not include me) heard a nasty sound. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a couple of riders who crashed on the way down. One was more or less okay, but the other was in considerable discomfort, having done something unpleasant to his shoulder (dislocation, separation, busted collarbone - not clear which). A couple of nice car drivers and at least one opther cyclist pulled over and one was calling 911 by the time I got there, so hopefully help came soon thereafter and the rider is on the way to recovery.

On through Tilden Park, all of us now reminded to be extra careful out there. Then along Grizzly Peak to Skyline to Pinehurst (northside). After I reminded everyone about the engineering marvel that northside Pinehurst isn't (some steep off-camber corners with occasional loose dirt and wetness sprinkled in), we went down through the always-gorgeous scenery. Then over Insult Hill to Moraga and lunch at Bianca's, the deli in the Safeway shopping center. (Stop in if you can - they are nice local people who make a good sammich and have a good selection of drinkables.)

After that, a slowish ride back the last five miles to Orinda BART - but then, I do everything that goes uphill slowish (on a good day) to downright glacial (on a more normal day).

Thanks to all who came out; we had a good time and the rest of you missed out. Special thanks to LanceOldstrong, who dialed backed his renowned climbing prowess to hang with me on most of the climbs. We had a good time catching up.

I hope there will be more NorCal SlowPoke Rides. They don't all have to be started by me; anyone can do it. All you have do is commit to a moderate length, not horrible amounts of climbing (I'll try to create flatter-but-still-interesting rides in the future), regrouping often and not dropping anyone, and making sure lunch features prominently in the plans.

Oh man! It's been weeks since my last visit. I'm always hopeful the slowpoke rides get resurrected then. I'll try to log on more often so that I don't miss out on the next one.

A great day for a bike ride! Thanks for putting this together BikingShearer. As my cycling was not as satisfactory last "season", rides like this are a great start to this "season."

hueyhoolihan 02-24-14 01:38 PM

good ride! had a great time. maybe again when the Carquinez Scenic Drive is reopened.

rodentcloister 02-27-14 01:28 PM

I really need to visit this forum more often…would have loved to join you all last Sunday. Maybe the next one. ;)

Late to the game...we're interested in the next Slow-Poke ride, so please do post up -- or email us directly b/c we're here so seldom -- theirish AT pacbell DOT net.

We miss y'all. That means all y'all. I'm quoting my Texan husband. Those terms don't exist in my Yankee vocabulary.
