Routes from San Francisco to Petaluma

Hi,
I'm planning on riding from San Francisco to Lagunitas Brewery (in Petaluma) in a few weeks. I'll be going up on a Saturday and returning on Sunday (likely taking the ferry from Larkspur on the return).

I'm trying to decide between two possible routes. Google Maps suggests a route through Fairfax and Nicasio, which sounds reasonable.

I also found a blog post with a different route that goes through San Rafael and along Novato Blvd (Google Maps link). The mileage is slightly longer, but I trust it a little better since it's a personal recommendation.

Anybody have any thoughts on the routes? Or a suggestions for a different route entirely?

Thanks in advance...

-Chris

I ride the Fairfax Nicasio route quite often. Its a very nice route.

The fairfax-nicasio route is much better.

The Novato Blvd route parallels 101 for the first half so you will get heavy traffic, housing developments, and no commendable scenery. The Nicasio route takes you into the west Marin grasslands and redwoods and some beautiful views, plus roads that are used to and used by a lot of cyclists. If you want to make it longer there are a lot of route variations from Nicasio that will take you through and over some of the signature routes in the bay area. You cold head further west and go over the Marshall Wall and ride along tomales bay to Tomales, then head back over to Petaluma. You might want to check out routes that the Marin Century takes, as it covers much of this area.

Depending on your mileage heading up the coast is a great option, then cut across the Marshall Wall to Marshall Petaluma Road. You'll love it!
Here's some basic routes North of the Golden Gate. You can get the gist from our Tomales Route map: to Tomales - A bike ride in Sausalito, CA Just turn right at Mile 40 in Marshall at Marshall Petaluma Road.

Here's a pic at the Corner of Decision (Novato Blvd or not?)

With the days longer this is almost workable as a commute from Sebastopol to the Financial District, at least one way. Leave at 4am, get to work ~10ish...
