CA 20 in Lake County safe?

I'm planning a mixed terrain ride through Lake County to ride Walker Ridge, Bartlett Springs, and High Valley Roads, unpaved routes through the mountains north of the lake. It looks like I'll need to ride on CA 20 for 15 miles from Clearlake Oaks east to Walker Ridge Road at the county line. Has anyone been on 20 there? Any idea how safe it is for bikes?

No idea, but please post back with a report of how this ride went - lots of dirt roads up there.

just did 20 east of 101 to 16 jct as part of a longer tour last fall. no problem. it's up and down, max about 6 percent for several miles at a time. don't know what it's like on 20 east of 16 jct though.

Interesting... I don't ride up there but I'm just down from there.. (Sonoma County) my guess would have been HELL NO! I'd be curious to see how many safe cycling routes are in Lake County though...

Thanks very much for the reply -- glad to hear it was fine. I'll just be west of the junction with 16. I wasn't concerned about the hills, more about the traffic situation since the shoulder looks like it goes in and out.

Thanks for the replies. 20 was indeed totally fine -- at least a four foot shoulder the whole way and not much traffic at all. The dirt roads up there are gorgeous (views over Clear Lake to Konocti and Mt St Helena) and epic but in some places very steep and with loose and deep gravel. We ended up riding Walker Ridge Road, which climbs to 3800', Brim Road, and Bear Valley Road back to 20. Except on the highway, we went miles without seeing anyone at all.
