I am newer than a newbie and I live in Federal Way, 25 minutes South of Seattle. I have been a below-knee amputee for 10 years. My badly damaged leg was not functional so after many attempts to save the leg I had it removed. Some of my amp-buddies ride bicycles but my leg strength is compromised. I was an avid bicyclist prior to my original accident. I have taught over 50 amputees to ride ski-bikes, this area is the nation's largest number of amputee ski-bikers. These are bike-like frames with skis that can be used as adaptive ski devices. These ski-bikes are sometimes converted down-hill mountain bikes. Now I want to build my own e-bike and teach my amp-buddies to build their own. I am going to spend this winter gathering information and with your help, we can become the "e-bike for amputees" capitol of the world....lofty goals... j

Thanks for your welcome, I am going to depend on you guys with experience in the selection of equipment. Any new area of interest has a whole new language and I am going to read posts on this forum to acquaint myself. My instinct tells me to fit a convesion kit on my Biachani hard tail that I haven't rode for 25 years. I can convert the kit onto a suspended bike after the learning phase. I will have many more questions and I do appreciate your patience and help... j

I know nothing about these things--I leave it to the LBS. But from what I've gathered on my walks around this virtual neighborhood, it appears that you will not leave here empty-handed.

Hi, I'm 55 y. Bike most of my life, race Masters ,i been addicted to cycling from the time i so my First bike race , it was the start of the ''1968 Tour de France '' in Vittel (France) .
I commute daily from Monroe or Snohomish to work in Kirkland (40 to 48 miles) and do long training ride on weekend .

I am new in Monroe and i'm looking for a training or riding partener.If you are interested or know some one let me know.

I'm a bit northeast of Seattle

moving from Berkeley, CA.
Going to Seattle in mid-February.

Need to find a place to live (near downtown with airport access -- fingers crossed) and need to figure out the good places to ride (road, mountain), hike, ski, and anything else I should know.

define "near" and "airport access"

its really fast to get to the airport from seattle proper (*except in rush hour traffic* and then you could always take the light rail(slow))

"near" downtown meaning I'll be working in one of those really tall buildings near, say 5th and Pike. I'd like to be able to get from my place and back without a huge hassle (meaning no driving).

"airport access" is pretty much anywhere near the light rail? you say slow, but the BART around here _blows_ compared to the one time I rode the light rail. I may be traveling a bit, so if I can live somewhere convenient to get to the office + be able to get to and from the airport without parking a car that'd be a HUGE plus.

I don't know a ton about Seattle neighborhoods, but from the little I do know, I'm guessing Belltown isn't my scene. Maybe Fremont or lower queen anne would work?

Don't blink or you might miss it

If you're working downtown, you might want to consider the Sounder train. It stops at King Street station, which isn't too terribly far from 5th & Pike. Stops on the south line are Tukwila, Kent, Auburn, Sumner, Puyallup & Tacoma. The train is bike friendly.

As far as airport access, Tukwila is closest. Kent is a close 2nd.

I live in Bonney Lake, take the shuttle to Sumner station, catch the train to King Street, and walk from there to the office at 1st & King. All told the commute takes about an hour. (Oh, and there is great riding around Bonney Lake!)

hmmm. Hadn't heard of the Sounder train, but it looks interesting. May situate me too far south, however my wife's family is in Portland and that certainly would make the escape south easier

Glad to hear there are so many amputee bikers around! My mother is an above-knee since 1984, she tried bicycles but never really got comfortable with it. She eventually got into motorcycles, and recently got a converted Harley trike!

just pushed the "**** it" button and am in lower queen anne kind of near westlake. The woman who was renting the unit was very amenable to setting everything up via mail/phone, so that was good enough for me. Only a 6 month lease, so even if it's terrible, it won't be terrible for long.

Hey everyone. Chad here from Everett, Washington. Stopping in to say hello to all the locals. Currently riding a Specialized Hardrock. Looking to get a road bike in the near future. I've got the truck, time for the sports car (I'm a car guy, so that 's how I rationalize things, lol!).

Good evening everyone! Fred, checking in from Phinney. Been into bikes for a long time (bmx/freestyle as a kid, mountain bike on/off as an adult etc), got my first road bike back in Sept 09. Have really only rode it a few times a year, usually Burke Gilman/Sammamish River trail to Redmond Town center, due to a 16 month old daughter. Getting more serious about the riding this year, as I've signed up for the STP and Chilly Hilly and finally set-up my trainer in the garage, and bought cold weather gear. Riding is much easier now that I've had Lasik done, and my daughter is a little older.
