I have lived in Olympia, Wa all my life. In fact, my ancestors came on the orginal wagon trains and settled the area. My lovely wife is from Mount Vernon, Wa. I ride in town on my breaks, lunch, etc. I ride to hunt and camp. We ride for fun

Boise, Idaho here.
I do ride every chance I get.

I also do like to make a couple trips a year to ride Mt. Hood, OR.
It's basically one of my favorite places to ride.

Hi all. I am a former Seattlite and moved to the very cusp of what may be the PNW region. For the last 13 years I have lived in Southern Oregon; Central Point/Medford area to be specific. It is just about 30 miles north of the California border on I-5. I'm not really sure this is truly PNW. We get drastically different weather than say Eugene, Or which is definitely still PNW. We get about half the rain, long, hot summers, and more sunny days.

If you feel as if you are a member of the PNW forum, then we welcome you into the fold. Or, you could become an honourary member, if you'd like .

Joe,
You're safe here. The bridge to California is closed.

Hi first post here.

I live in West Portland. The weather is getting nicer and I've started looking for a commuter bike. (I like the Trek Portland, preliminarily.)

I used to race in Team Oregon (road and cyclocross in high school.) In college, I rode mostly free-ride and downhill racing. My only bike at the moment is an Ellsworth Dare, setup for freeride. It's a beast (45lbs) and I am looking for a more appropriate road/CC bike to be more versatile.

Anyway, that's my intro. Seems like a nice group here.

road bike about a grand

I just, and I mean just, with only two rides and a total of 50 miles, had my lbs build a Soma Double-Cross for a grand, with Tiagra all around. Before that, I was looking at the Surly Cross Check, which you should be able to get for a grand, and maybe less if you have a good relationship with your lbs. Finally, REI and the Element, which I almost bought, but went and talked to the lbs and told them what I had to spend, and since this is my fifth bike from that shop (two for me now, two for wife, and one for child) he made me a pretty good deal. But for your price range, the Element is 1100, and the Surly should be about a grand out of the box. The Soma Double Cross will run $400-500 for the frame alone I suspect and you can build from there. I'm sure there are others, but since I was in the same boat as you, this is where I ended up. I'm a happy man.

I decided to just sell my Ellsworth. Consequently my bike budget is going up considerably. Performance Bike has some nice deals right now... that may be my best option for value.

Check out my eBay link.
