Yeah I heard something about them making only trailers for the time being. I gotta go get me a piccalo before they are all gone.

It's a big loss for Eugene, and the cycling community in general. Best of luck to you, hope your next job is even more fun and exciting than the last. I'm riding out Lorane and Briggs Hill today, want to go?

From the Bicycle Retailer and Industry New (BRAIN) website:

Burley Design Sold to Oregon Businessman; Employees Laid Off

SEPTEMBER 11, 2006 -- EUGENE, OR (BRAIN)—All 104 employees at Burley Design learned on Friday that the company had been sold to local businessman Michael Coughlin, and that under the new ownership, they were being—at least temporarily—laid off, according to The Register-Guard.

Sixty-five will return to their jobs today, while 39 positions will be eliminated.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed, though Coughlin did discuss his plan to refocus Burley on bicycle trailers and move away from tandems, recumbents and road bikes. He said that the financially troubled company can be profitable again by March.

Burley converted in June to a privately held corporation after 28 years as a worker-owned cooperative. Former members of the co-op were issued stock certificates, though it's not yet clear how much the shares are worth.

Don't worry about it. They're parking lot was a hell of a lot bigger than their bike rack. Something's wrong when you promote bicycles but have more parking spaces than bike spaces.

Not sure what happened. Perhaps you can post more details... I'd like to say that it's easier in other industries. NOT. The whole concept of a career (or long term employment) has gone out the window.

Burley's status

I bought a 2006 Burley Hudson and a Burley Piccolo this past March. I'm worried about the frame warrantee for my Hudson. I take it on loaded touring trips. I sent Burley an email asking about their status and asked about warrantee issues. They haven't answered yet.

Call your dealer and find out what the company is doing about warranty. If they have had to clarify what is going to happen, it will be first with those that have retail inventory and may have to perform point of sale service. My guess is that they will honor their warranties, as they are legally bound to do in most states, unless they have filed bankruptcy and a court has provided them relief.

As they still appear to survive as a trailer maker--and good luck with that--warranty continuity is something that they will likely have to continue in order to enjoy any confidence in their ongoing business.

I was going to buy a piccalo, but the local dealer that had one left, jacked the price up.... so screw it. Guess I will have to put up with an inferior product from someone else.

I bought a 2004 Rock 'n Roll tandem in 2006. I wonder if it will be collectable in 50 years.

wow, this dude posts about how he's upset over his job loss, and everyone rushes in with warranty questions, and problems of where to find gear now...

you're right, i guess the last two are bigger issues.

so to get OT...steelboy, that really sucks...i hope you have a little something laid away. if you're really desperate, anything that pays the bills and ensures you groceries is worth pursuing until you can move on to something you actually want. but the immediate concern is, of course, survival. good luck keeping your footing and moving forward. unexpected changes in life are the worst...
