Thinking of buying a Trek Portland - in Portland

Hey guys, I am new to cycling, I am looking for a nice commuter I could also use for recreational activity's and I don't mind dropping the $1500 bucks on the Portland by trek.
here is a pic of it in real life if you dont know what it looks like https://velospace.org/node/2280

Anyone have anything to say about the trek Portland or comments?

I live in Portland, and it rains here a lot so I figured this bike seems to be built well for the rain, not only that its called "The Portland" pretty cool considering I live downtown Portland. Also any advise for biking in Portland?

anyway let me know and thanks in advance.

I saw couple of them around and they look cool. Not sure how they ride but you should test ride one and get a good fit, very important!
For resources look bikeportland.org it's a great site.
Get good riding gear, the bike is only one part of the purchase, if you want to bike in comfort the gear is very important, and a good metal lock.
Ciao

I went and seriously considered one - until I weighed it. 22.5lbs for a 54cm. No thanks. For $1500, I can have a full carbon, Ultegra/105 mix (17lbs) from Performance Bikes down the street.

^ The point is it's a heavy bike. I love the disc brakes however the Portland is not a racer or anything of the sort.

I get a kick out of the weight issue. I can go as fast on my bent and it weight 30# as I do on my racing road bike. weight is over rated.

You should go to REI and look at the Buzz, basically the the same bike and much lower price. Just saying.

Do you own a Portland? I don't understand your irrational defense of bloat. If one shops for a $1500, weigh is a very legitimate consideration. At the same time, while I appreciate the cool Avid discs and the sexy carbon fork, the wheelset choice make it an inappropriate bike for hardcore commuting and it's not light enough for racing. It's a jack of all trades, master of none bike.

I just get a kick out of the weight whine. since the fellow never wanted a rice bike why has it been important? racers suck for commuting I know I did it for over a year.
weight is a over bloated deal. it does not matter a huge amount to the speed of your travel. but I do agreee on the wheels. but seldom so I want to keep the original wheelset a bike comes with.
