2007 Portland Bicycle Master Plan Rides!
From an email I received today:
The first ride will follow the following format: Meet at 5:15 at Terry Schrunk Plaza (SW 3rd between Madison & Jefferson). Briefly discuss ride logistics/issues Ride at 5:30. Ride for 1 hour or so along predetermined route with several stops. Convene afterward for as long as needed to discuss what we saw, how we felt about it, ideas we have, etc. Attached is a map of the first route. The first ride will be next Tuesday, February 6th. We'll meet at Terry Schrunk Plaza (SW 3rd between Madison & Jefferson) at 5:15. There are multiple goals for these rides: 1) Education. To have Portlanders understand the standard tools the City uses to create bikeways; how we use them and why we use them. Most importantly, people need to experience them and get a feel for how they work and begin to think about what might work better. 2) Vision. Can we create--even if only for a little while and in a limited area--the feeling one gets when riding in world class cycling cities? Can we give people a vision and perhaps the sensation of how Portland can be a world-class cycling city? 3) Discussion Forum. I want to create a regular forum in which people interested in bicycling can meet regularly, look at conditions in the field, and hold discussions about them that range as far as the group wishes to take them. What works, what doesn't work, how do we improve? These rides are an initial part of an overall outreach strategy for the update to the Bicycle Master Plan. As PDOT is currently working on an existing conditions report for the Bike Master Plan, the rides for the first few months will focus primarily on existing bikeways. As our focus expands to how to change the network and develop new routes, the rides will change to reflect the search for new ways to ride. We're starting in the inner eastside, mostly on established bicycle boulevards because these roads are among the most bikeable in the city. Future rides will take us to every section of the city--wherever we've developed bikeways. Please attend. Please spread this message widely. The more, the merrier. Thanks. We rode a route that took us through SE Portland and saw a lot of built up bikeway facilities, and rode the streets in the 70's where they're proposing building a bikeway. There was quite the difference in the areas. We finished up at the Lucky Lab where we ate dinner, and discussed what we saw, and got some edumucation on "bikeway tools", and received some really great handouts on them. The folks at PDOT really want to know what we think about where we travel and they want our input on which directions they go in the next 20 years. Roger Geller wants everyone to know that there is going to be a Bicycle Master Plan ride the 1st Tuesday of each month until there's more daylight out, then he wants to do 2 rides a month. Each ride will focus on a particular area of Portland. This is going to go on for about a year and a half, he said, so there's plenty of opportunity to participate! Roger is kind of hoping for increasing numbers of riders as the weather improves, with hope that it will culminate in an "Amsterdam Effect" wherever we ride. :beer:
I had a great deal of nerdy fun, and even got to meet randya. It was a great group of people ranging from average commuters to someone from the BTA, even an off-duty bike cop. People had excellent ideas, but they could be even better if more people participated. So block out your evenings on first Tuesdays for a while, and randya or I will post information about the next ride when it comes out. If anyone wants to see the handouts, PM me. |
Did you guys ride by my house? 74th, just north of Foster...I saw a group of bikers go by the other day, which has never happened out here before.

YOU MAY WANT TO BRING SOMETHING TO EAT IF YOU DON'T EAT BEFORE THE RIDE... This is not necessarily a led ride. Tomorrow is ride #3. Meet at Terry Schrunk Plaza at 5:15. This ride will be for and in NW, and it's not without controversy at the moment.
I still think it will be fun, and we'll all go to the Rogue Ale Public house afterwards for discussion, beer and food. :) |
