Threads like these remind me of why I would live nowhere else in the lower 48 than the PNW.

Not my bike, but my view on my regular ride. Hawaii is part of the PNW group on the forum. I have family in Washington and Oregon, so enjoy your stuff, too..

Sorry about the mixed image sizes, but as a sorta newbie, I can't seem to get the image screen to consistently open for me to select image size. Any tips for me on Mac Book Pro?

East Sound and Gig Harbor

My two main activities in life are sailing and bicycling.

The picture above is from a sailing trip I took up to Orcas Island. This is the town dock for the village of East Sound on the north end of East Sound. Orcas is in the San Juan Island archipelago just south of the US/Canadian border about 120 miles NW of Seattle. Boats can not tieup to the dock overnight so I left Mirador anchored to the left of this picture.

This was taken on a bike ride from Tacoma- thru Gig Harbor and out to Purdy, Rosedale, Arletta, and back to Tacoma. The bike is on the town dock in Gig Harbor. After I took the picture I got on the bike, clipped into my LOOK pedals and tried to ride away.

The front wheel dropped into one of those big cracks between the planks and I went over on my side. Behind me in this picture were five picnic tables and a big grassy area where folks can watch the boats come and go. They were impressed with my riding skills!

Love this thread. Great to see all the pics of the Pacific NW. I lived in the Seattle/Tacoma area from 11/1/1953 till 9/6/2011 when I retired and moved to the Big Island of Hawaii near Keaau. I have ridden many of the places in this thread--but not on a bicycle. I have ridden motorcycles since I was eight. But since moving to Hawaii I was given a low end mountain bike and recently took up bicycle riding again at 59. I have worked out in gyms since I was 49 so transitioning back into biking wasn't too tramatic. I find myself finding any excuse to ride my mountain bike now. 12 mile trip to pick up the mail from our Post Office box in Keaau. 16 mile trip to Pahoa on Saturdays for our Big Island Chess Club, where we also have tournaments (played tournaments in Seattle/Tacoma and Las Vegas previously). Or just a local 12 miler around the developement we live in (which is huge). I'm working up to a round trip to Hilo, which will be 25+ miles depending on how much running around I do in Hilo.

In the Pacific NW one of my favorite motorcycle rides was the Oregon coast. As a kid I got down to Oregon a lot as both my parents were born there and we had lots of family in the Eugene area and Klamath Falls. The last six years before the move we lived in Puyallup, and there were many great places for motorcycling and bicycling.

From my ride home from work Sunday morning. Although the ambient temp was 37 degrees, that is ice on the pier. Classic example of structures like bridges freezing over first. Made for some treacherous riding!

Hard to make out, but that is the Victoria clipper on the right making her way up to Canada, and one of our local Washington State Ferries on the left. I should have zoomed in on the mountains and gotten another shot of them, they were pretty spectacular. I kept thinking I'd get a better shot farther down the Myrtle Edwards trail, but eventually realized that as I got closer to Magnolia the bluff was starting to block my view. Hopefully sometime this month it'll be nice out on one of the mornings I can take this route home. Come April I'll too busy with school and full time work to take this route until late June.

Rolled down to Renton to pick up a new wheel from a Craigslist seller. Sometimes you gotta love CL, seller had bought the wrong size wheel, so I picked up a brand new, still in the plastic, Sun Rhyno Lyte rim laced to a grey LX hub for a whopping $25! Of course I had to detour nearly 30 miles out of my way on my ride home from work this morning to pick it up, but it's not like I don't need the exercise right?

First a few pics from my ride into work the night before. Just as I was nearly ready to leave home a cloudburst opened up in my neighborhood. I delayed my departure by a few minutes and changed my plans of where I was going to grab a meal accordingly. I was shocked to find as I made my way in that what had fallen as rain in my neighborhood had fallen as a huge amount of hail at lower elevations to the south of me. At first I thought it was snow, but then I finally realized it was hail as the cars driving next to me kicked it over into the bike lane. As I bombed down the hill on the approach to the University Bridge I was plowing through over an inch of the stuff! At the intersections the passage of the cars has redistributed it into four inch drifts into the areas where the bikes had to be.

By the time I had a rolled into work, showered and changed, had a meal, and then made my way upstairs to start my shift, the storm was clearing.

These three shots are from Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park in Renton, the next morning after I picked up my wheel I went to this park to get a bite to eat at the waterfront Ivar's.

This is a historical marker. Renton Municipal airport not only has major Boeing facilities, but it also has a seaplane base that dates back to dawn of aviation. Will Rogers departed here in a seaplane trip around the world, but tragically died en route. This marker commemorates him and his co-pilot. Interestingly the land has filled in part of the lake and where this marker is, is where the seaplanes used to moor and taxi out, they left from right this spot.

Thought y'all might appreciate this sign I spotted on the airport perimeter road!

The preferred method of carrying a new wheel home! Got my schoolbooks (back in college) in the rubber bag on the other side of the front rack. Weather reports were showing 80% chance of rain, transitioning to 80% chance of thundershowers with winds out of the SW at 13-21 mph, but I lucked out and only briefly had some light rain and no wind to speak of, but I changed my planned route off of the ridge tops into the lee of them.

Your mudflaps might be doing their job if a puddle forms off of them when you park!

Happy Fenders-Off day everyone! OK, so maybe that's just my personal little holiday for when I take the race blades off my road bike. I celebrated with a quick breeze along the Fern Ridge Bike Trail in Eugene, Oregon.

Lots of Red Winged Blackbirds calling in the rushes of the West Eugene Wetlands, but they were so intent on chasing the lady blackbirds (and running off impertinent cyclists) that I wasn't able to get a good shot.
