Monster Cookie Metric Century

Sure signs of spring in Oregon 1. Daffodils blooming everywhere, 2. Far more whale watchers than whales on the coast, and 3. boxes full of Monster Cookies waiting for hungry riders to roll into Salem after the first big cycling event of the season ( cookies don't have a chance of seeing the sunset with this crowd).

It's still time for early registration, save a few bucks off of the low entry fee. We've had big Bike Forums groups in past years, not sure where everyone has gone, but maybe a reunion group would be fun this year.

i don't get this. i was reading the site and they say there is an entry fee and that helmets are required. on top of that, they post the map of the route. what is to stop me from just crashing this bike ride, not wearing a helmet, not obeying the traffic laws, etc etc. seems pretty stupid.

That wouldn't be nice, for one thing.

Do that, and you won't get any cookies!

Sure, you could ride from Salem to Champoeg and back, but you can do that any day. Paying the fee for the ride means you get support (mechanical, food, water, emergency service if you need it) and the company of a zillion other folks.

If you "bandit" the ride, your tires will go flat, your shorts will be stained, you'll run out of sunscreen, and bees will set up shop in your helmet. So there.

Hey Shifty, KRhea up in Portland here. I'm working on bringing 100members of our Portland Velo cycling club down for the ride.
We'll have one group of "speed demons" aka our race team, who will rock the ride at 25mph or faster and the "rest of us".
My wife and I will lead a fast group, 19-21mph, on our tandem as we do every year and we'll also have plenty of riders from 19mph down to 15mph.

Great ride, great cookies, great route and hopefully...great weather.

By the way, Portland Velo welcomes anyone and everyone to our "Saturday Signature" rides. This past Saturday morning we had well over 100 riders show up and as the weather gets better we'll 150 to 200 riders on our Saturday rides. We break everyone into groups based on their projected speed on the flats, 15mph, 17, 19, 21 and then Hammer 'n Nails. It's a great group of folks of all riding abilities.

Check our website for details about all our club rides: portlandvelo.net

Great to hear about the excellent Portland Velo Club, I need to get up to Portland for a weekend soon, I'll have to join you guys for a ride when I do. We don't have a good club in Eugene anymore, the one here has gone weird on us, so not fun to ride with anymore, PV would be a welcome change.

Look forward to seeing your group at the Monster Cookie!!

Still time for early registration, we always roll the dice on weather for this ride, but it's fun rain or shine!

Oregon roadies, start your engines!!

I am in for this ride and will most likely be in KRhea's group as I usually am on Saturday rides with PV. This will be my first big cookie.

Hey Shifty, our group is getting bigger and better by the day my friend. I'd love to have you join us. We're doing a Portland Velo group photo at 8:45 right across the street from registration and rollin' out at 9 sharp.

For those of you who missed it, what a nice ride!!!! The Salem Bicycle Club did a great job The weather was decent, certainly not too hot, good food, and all the riders were truly friendly. What more could you ask for!!!!

Uhhh... two-way tailwind? Beer and pretzels?

Seriously- today was about as good as it could be. A little chilly, but almost zero wind. My wife and I just sailed along. I did see the recumbent trike "train" a couple times- I'll point to a picture as soon as one's available.

Next up: Ride Around Clark County. At least I don't have to drive an hour to get there- the route passes right by my house. Trail Putty... mmmmm....

Ran into Shifty at a couple of the stops and he looked to be in great form for the ride. Very good choice of goodies at the stops which where never seeing really long waits. Nice Job Salem Bicycle club.

It was great to see velocity, he is just full of surprises, and he had a very pleasant surprise this year with a new riding partner, congrats!!

Also great to see and visit with Skiph, although he was pretty busy drumming up interest in the century in Newport in the summer.

I also saw the pack from Portland Velo as they were leaving the half way rest stop at the park. Looking good guys, it must have been a quick return to Salem for you!

It was a nice day, so the turn out was heavy, nice people, safe riding and loads of cookies at every stop, what more could you want?

Now the season begins!

It was a great day for a ride, although definitely a little chilly. I couldn't have had one less layer...I was already cutting it close without a jacket. Taking off after each stop it took a few to warm back up, but once we were rolling it was good. I have no clue what anyone else looks like here, so I don't know if I saw you...but I probably did! This is me in the red....gotta pedal twice as hard to keep up with the tall guys on either side.

Also, Ticia, I put a few pictures up on my blog post yesterday:

Monster Cookie Report 2009

Hope to see you guys at the next go around!

I was the guy in the hi-vis yellow jacket...not in this picture, but if you saw a guy in a hi-vis yellow jacket, it might have been me.

This was my second year for the Monster Cookie. It's consistently got the best rest stops of any ride I've done. Plus, this is the one and only ride that I don't complain about the hills. The people who organize this ride are awesome!

HA! I'm pretty sure if someone set up a tent to the right of the registration tent and sold hi-vis jackets, they could have made a killing for all those who felt left out of the yellow jacket club! I have never seen so many in my life!
