Any ride recommendations (mountain or road) in Skagway, AK?

I will be stopping there on a cruise and think it might be fun to rent a bike. How is the ride up to White Pass? Scenic? Looks like the climb is less than 3000 feet. Anyone know the total distance and climbing? Is the road good and safe for cycling (light traffic and wide shoulders or a bike lane)? I know lots of people ride DOWN, but I'd prefer to ride up if it's a safe and nice route. I may bring some others who are less experienced, though.

Or are there other road or dirt/trail routes starting from Skagway that would be nice? Or should I just stick to hiking.

Thanks for any advice or tips!
