Let the season begin!

Sure, the brevet season opener was a couple weekends ago with the Renton Populaire 100k; but this coming Saturday is the first official (medal earning) distance for the Seattle Randonneurs 2010 season. The 11 annual (last one ever, and we mean it this time) Chili Feed 200k rolls off at 07:00 (06:00 check in) on March 13th.

If the average organized century ride has become less than challenging for you, maybe it's time to take things to the next level and give randonneuring a try! Randonneuring is self-supported long distance riding, based on the old French traditions.
There are no Dan Henrys (street arrows). There is no SAG wagon. There are no corporate sponsored rest-stops with Hammer Gels and Clif Bars. There is the rider, the bicycle, a cue sheet and a clock. It is not a race... heck, you only have to average about 9mph to finish within the time limits. Randonneuring (can be, but) isn't about being fast; it's about enjoying the challenge of a long ride, the cameraderie of your fellow randonneurs, and being part of a tradition over 100 years old.

this coming saturday and weekend is also the Cascade Bicycling Club's Expo down at the cruise ship terminal pier in Magnolia. I suspect this will be a much easier season kickoff for far more Northwest cyclists.

you know, beer, bicycle demonstrations, commerce, ogling the latest bike jewels and last years closeouts.... I will be there doing something with Arkel of Canada which is nifty but no riding except the commute.

the rando event sounds much more fun, and chili included!
