Banks - Vernonia Rails to Trails

Does anyone have new information on this. The last I heard the project for new paving was to be done 10/15. I am coming from several hours away and would love to know before hand it the complete trail is open and paved.

For what it's worth. I was through there monday the 11th on my way to the coast and it was closed then. But if you go just passed Stub Stewart, right before the closure there is an access road that you can take down to highway 47. It's a couple of miles from there until you can get back on the trail again. That's if you're going from Banks to Vernonia.

When I was though there the trail was closed at McDonald Rd (GE: 45.792261° -123.220615°. It was not gated so on I went. Met a few other folks. Turned about two miles further in and headed back to Vernonia. Met a gravel truck taking the lane on the way back. I think it is closed there because that is the first point a public road crosses the trail above Tophill, so that is the point of access on their haul road. The work site is miles further down trail.

Chatted up a park guy working on the "new" bridge at the Beaver Creek TH. He said they are abandoning the cutting filled with mire just out of Tophill and rerouting the trail there. Sure were piles of tree debris stacked up at the Tophill Trailhead. Said the 29th is The Day and _____ (name escapes me but high in the food chain) had been making frequent visits to encourage diligence and progress.

The new bridge at Beaver Creek is a '50 Bailey Bridge. Interesting. Some assembly required. If it can hold a tank, bikies not an issue.

You could have a nice ride out of Stub S. up to the work area and down to the other one in Banks. Saw it in June being roughed out and again on the trip down with the flatwork done and the paving to go.

I went today with my sister. It is closed for about a mile from Banks, but they also said the 29th is the open date. The paving was all done on that part, they were just finishing up the Banks parking area and the new paving was closed. We rode from Manning to Tophill and onto the new paving that was up there, but also closed. I will go again!

Hi. I plan to ride the Trail to the coast as you did. Can you give me an account of your route and any suggestions that occur to you. I plan to go from Portland to Big Eddy Park where I'll camp. From there, I'll go on to Ft. Stevens cutting off Rt.202 at Olney and taking Youngs River Rd into Ft. Stevens. A friend and I will be driving trikes.
Could you recommend a return route from Ft. Stevens to Portland? I heard Rt.30 is rather heavily traveled--lumber trucks were mentioned. I live in Ashland and plan to do the ride next summer.

Phil, if you're going to ride to the Recumbent Retreat, I can pass the request along to other people riding that way.

The Hwy. 47/Hwy. 202 is generally the best alternative both ways. If you want to head south from Fort Stevens, heading inland at Tillamook (Hwy. 6) is practical, I think.
