No bike theft problems in Portland?

My son will be attending grad school at Oregon Health and Sciences in June. When we were helping him look for a place to live back in February, we took the tram from the river area up to the campus. There was a rather large bike parking area at the bottom of the tram and I was amazed at how many nice bikes were parked there. Aren't there any bike thieves in Portland? Is a U lock good enough?

How is the bike commute from the Goose Hollow area to OHS? He was talking about either riding to the tram or straight to the campus.

From Goose Hollow to OHSU almost isn't worth getting the bike out. That's only a mile or two- walk! If it's too much, the Streetcar covers most of that route.

My preference for riding in downtown would be a beater-ish fixie or single-speed. You can get away with a U-lock and an expensive bike, but why risk it?

I think people feel comfortable locking up their bikes there because there is almost always a security guard at the bottom of the tram, as well as a ton of foot traffic. As well as having the street car coming every 15 minutes through there, its just a very visible place that you probably won't find a thief.

That being said, I bet you that if you went in to steal a bike, nobody would stop you... Just saying.
