We'll soon be traveling to Portland, and plan to stay in a nice hotel. We'll be doing day rides. We'd like to be in an interesting area of town, with fun restaurants within walking/riding distance.

Suggestions as to which hotel to choose?

When I go down there to race I usually stay in downtown Hilton, of all places. It is cheaper than other downtown hotels, and very nice, and it's right in the middle of everything. They have free parking if you are driving. Get a room on upper floors. The view is nice.

Heron Haus B&B is a great place. It's near the Pearl District, the Arboretum, the Japanese Garden, and not too far from the zoo (although it's a mighty hilly ride).

Hotel Modera is also very nice with a nice restaurant/bar and outdoor area with firepits. Rooms are usually very reasonable. I highly recommend it.

If you were in the mood for something non-traditional, I would give the Ace a shot. It's on the edge of downtown and near the Pearl.

I usually stay at the hostel on Glisan St.They have private rooms with or without a private bath. I always meet interesting people over meals there and it is close to downtown and the train station (if I don't ride there, I take the train). It's not exactly a nice hotel, but it can add a different flavor to the trip. The staff is always super helpful, especially if you show up without a car since they have very limited parking.

I stay at the Residence Inn at Lloyd Center. Large rooms, take your bikes in the room, light rail stop nearby, fun neighborhood, ride the river bike paths from the Inn, or put bikes on light rail and go t the edge of town and ride in the country. I second Shifty's idea. If I had a choice, I'd stay on the eastside and ride or train it over to the west side/Pearl/downtown if you want. I'm biased, because I much prefer the east side of the river, but I also think it's easier and better cycling generally for people new to town.

I also agree. When I've visited Portland I've stayed at the Red Lion next to the Convention Center, and feel that location offers a lot more flexibility than staying downtown. That Red Lion is pretty affordable, but if you want to stay in a more upscale place, I've also stayed in the DoubleTree and can definitely recommend it (except for the fact that they charge daily for wifi access).

BTW, I now live in Portland, and I do like the inner eastside.

I tried to book a room for the weekend of July 8th (Rev 3 triathlon) and 1) the Hilton room rates that weekend are DOUBLE the normal, and b) there are no rooms available. There must be some corporate event taking place that weekend.

I have stayed at the Jupiter Hotel and would definitely stay there again. I can't speak for how bike friendly it is but it is a very fun and friendly place overall. Not only that, but it also includes the Doug Fir Lounge (a hip music venue) and a decent restaurant.
