    Rides in Southern Oregon

Other than the "Ride the Rogue" in September, does anyone know of any organized rides in the Grants Pass/Medford area of Oregon?

Siskiyou Bicycle Club puts on the Mountain Lakes Challenge rides in late June. There are three options (metric, century and double metric), all are beautiful, but hilly.

I keep meaning to ride on down for the tour de fronds. Maybe this is the year.

On a completely separate note (I'd PM you, but you wouldn't be able to reply (you need fifty postings to be able to reply), so please pardon the thread hijack), since you live in Bandon, I assume you have been on Seven Devil's Rd. Has the chromium mine that went into operation along there made it unpleasant to ride on, or is it the same as ever? If they are running the number of trucks that they initially estimated, it seems like it would be a bit hazardous, but those sort of estimates are usually more than a little overblown.

FYI, The Mountain Lakes Challenge was canceled this year.

Here is a link to touring guide that has a lot of the rides listed.

Here is a link to a ride on the North CA coast that isn't advertised very much. I did it a few years ago and plan to do it again this year if things work out.

Well, I should have checked with my "final decision" befoe I announced that I would ride the tour de fronds. The 15th of June is her dsd's 90th birthday so that is out this year.

The chromium mine is now out of business. Coos county declined to rennew their permit to transit county property. 19 perople are now out or work and they never did transist Seven Devils road.

I train on that road 3 days a week.

This early in the season I think I'd only do the 100K. What do you plan on doing?

I ride the Lost Coast every year, usually twice, with a full touring load. I'll do it for the first time ever on a tandem this June; I never seem to be free for the organized ride. I always wonder just how steep those hills would feel without a touring load. Someday I'll find out. You definitely want to do the 100 mile ride. You haven't truly lived until you climb The Wall at the end of that century. Or, maybe you haven't truly died until you climb that bugger. It will definitely make you wish you had loafed a bit on the earlier portions. The view coming down into Ferndale is absolutely awesome!

No wonder I didn't see any extra truck traffic the last time I rode on Seven Devils Rd. Thanks for clearing that up. I'm not overly surprised the mine isn't operational anymore; it seemed like an edgy business plan. At some point Oregon's low-population counties would do well to find a way to leverage their wonderful landscapes for something other than extraction. Maybe we all need to organize more rides to bring in some tourist money.

You'd really enjoy that road out of Powers. I'd recommend trying it on your own sometime. I've only ridden it loaded for touring. The road does get a little rough in places.

My brother and I will be riding the Tour De Fronds this year using the long out and back route out of Glendale. I'd prefer starting out of Powers, but it's about an hour of additional driving if we started from that end.

On my first ride through the area, we did run into some cyclists using the county roads south of the Coquille River. I'm not sure if they were affiliated with a bike club or not, but they did live in the area. It looks like you could do a nice loop heading south to Bandon and then cutting east to Myrtle Point.
