    North Cascades Highway closed

Was reading that the road is closed and crews are working to clear it

Hoping to cross from west over to Winthrop around april 20

Any idea if it'll be open by then ? Or is there still high risk of snow in April ?

There's a good chance it will be closed; the last I heard, DOT is hoping to get it clear in late April. You can see their progress here:

It's a gorgeous stretch of road. You can see some pictures here:

Here's Washington Pass, in early July of last year, which will be the home stretch in the direction you want to go; it's still 20 or 30 miles to Winthrop, but they're all down hill from this point (at least until Mazama, where the road flattens out).

Please note that once you leave Mazama, it will be 50+ miles until you go by a store. You're starting in the desert, even in April it will be quite warm. I bring a water purifier with me on rides out here; you can see a small creek/waterfall near the road in this picture, it's as good a place to fill your bottles as any, and a ~5 ounce UV purifier that fits in your pocket will kill any germs in the water before you drink it.
    Don't believe everything you think.

It's hard to say. The median opening date (according to records) is April 20th, which falls within your schedule. However, that doesn't mean much, it's just the average. The year I crossed the North Cascades Hwy it opened on May 25th. The latest opening was 1974, when it didn't open until June 14th!

    More info here: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Traffic/Pass...urehistory.htm

The long and the short: Have a Plan B ready and hope for the best. It's been a dry March in the NW, but we could have a wet April. And yes, it can/will snow up there in April.

And here's a Q-Q plot for first opening/final closing dates on SR 20 up until 2008:
