It's a fantastic ride. I haven't done it yet this season, but might want to camp at Diablo Lake next weekend to do the ride.

the weather was so amazing. snow at the top of rainy pass, so we couldn't make it to washinton pass and the east gate... but it was only snowy at the top of rainy pass. the rest of the day was DRY and sun breaks

Looks like you guys had a spectacular ride! What a difference a few months makes, when I rode Rainy Pass last July, it was a sweltering 160 degrees.

From your pics it looks like the Colonial Creek Campground (near the bridge over Diablo Lake on SR-20) is all melted out. Do you think that's a good bet? I've got the idea that it would be nice to camp there this weekend and ride up there.

So to get this straight, SR-20 is closed for the winter and it's still legal to bike it? Where do you guys park? How many miles can you ride on it car-free?

The North Cascades Highway opened (to cars) yesterday. It closes for the winter at the Ross Lake Trailhead on the west side, and I think near the Early Winters campground on the east. Before they open it fully to cars, they plow it and do a lot of avalanche blasting. It's legal to ride a bike on the road while this is happening, but it's also prudent to get the blasting schedule. It's also legal to ski, hike, and snowshoe along the road all winter.

You can park anywhere now, but while it's closed in the winter time, you can park at the Ross Lake TH, the Diablo Lake overlook, etc, both of these areas have parking lots. I went up there last spring with my bike while people were skiing on the road, I parked somewhere between Marblemount and Newhalem and rode to the point where the road is closed, then back.

Sorry to post so often in your thread, jdg. This is probably my favorite place on earth.
