McKenzie Pass Oregon - 2013

The McKenzie Pass road is open to bicycles only from the east side ( Sisters side ) as of April 26. Work continues to open the west side, it won't be long as it is a low snow year. The season comes early this year....enjoy!! https://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/REGIO...s_Project.aspx

Howdy Shifty,

Any idea how many weeks we have until they open it to cars?

I'd say 3 to 4 weeks. They will open it by Memorial Day. The sooner you go the better this year.

Took the family hiking today - I was thinking next weekend until I realized Sunday was Mother's day! I may not get a chance before the pass opens.
Hopefully whoever does takes some picture for the rest us!

I rode the pass road on Friday, it was a beautiful day and a great ride. They may be ready to open the gates soon, Memorial day for sure.

ODOT announced today they plan to open McKenzie Pass to cars on June 16. Plenty of time to get in a couple rides before that date.

As a side note, at my end of the state, they are forecasting snow again. Last week the BLM announced that the Bear Camp Road was now open. Tonight, they have closed it again due to snow.

Rode McKenzie Pass today. Lots of people were out enjoying the lack of cars. I did a S24O loop using McKenzie Pass and Santiam Pass.
Started and ended at Santaim Pass. Hwy 20 was busy, hot, and windy. The rest of the route was fantastic.
Pictures are here.
One more Saturday until the gate opens I believe.

I meant to post this up before they opened the road to cars but didn't get around to editing it in time, oh well, here's a video of riding McKenzie Pass from east to west

Cool video. I want to ride that, but I don't know if I would want to ride back up. Maybe I could get somebody to meet me at the other end. I love that road on my motorcycles, but my Fargo corners even better than they do. Was the loose gravel a problem?

Thanks! and no, the gravel wasn't bad at all, pretty easy to avoid. This video was only a couple weeks after they had opened it to cars, later in the spring the riding was even better.
