Family-friendly bike route/tour in Portland?
We're planning a trip up to Portland soon and we have a 7 yo son (special needs) who is a new independent rider and another son (11). They both are relatively new riders and we would like to see the city and experience it more firsthand by bicycling. Is there a bike route that you can recommend that would be both fun & safe that you could recommend? Thanks!
Also, any favorite bike shops? I'm wanting to buy some panniers for groceries, so any place that has a good selection and good vibe

Hi Jewel -- I'd suggest a lap around Waterfront Park, then go up SE Clay street by OMSI to Clever Cycles at SE 9th and Hawthorne for your pannier shopping, and maybe Lucky Lab (across the street) or the food carts at 12th/Hawthorne for a fun trip. There are also calm bike-friendly streets just south of there around Ladd's Circle.

If you'll be in town next Sunday, Aug. 25th, then you might want to ride the Sunday Parkways (https://www.portlandoregon.gov/transportation/58929). The streets can get crowded at times but there are lots of other kids around.

The Waterfront Trail and Eastbank Esplanade hook in to the Oaks Bottom Trail and then to the Springwater Corridor. These are all off-street paths and the connections are through low-traffic streets.
