    No bike Expo next year

Cascade website said no Expo next year. Bummer. I though attendance was pretty full the last few years but I guess not. Hopefully they still will do the swap meet in Feb though.

I find it interesting that they moved into a new building, hired a new director, stopped giving out tyvek jackets at STP and now pulling the plug on the bike expo all in the same year. Advocacy seems to be their main mission. Still lots of group rides year round and still some great big events. Having never been to an Expo I'll not miss it but am troubled by its loss.

They stopped the jackets from rider input since we all basically said we wanted something useful in our STP packets. Maybe we'll find out more of the rest when they have their open house soon.

The CBC newsletter had high praise for the bike expo, and listed the date for February.

I agree Cascade Bike Club seems to have become another political group, too bad.

I do lament the loss of the Expo, but more focus on bicycle advocacy is really important to push our local leaders to implement better bike lanes and trails. I myself welcome the focus. I also have noticed that they have been aggressively recruiting and training new ride leaders, resulting in more free daily rides. Another very welcome result of the recent changes.

There is only so much a relatively small group can do, and focusing on better cycling infrastructure, safer riding and increasing the free ride program helps the most amount of people, and the sport.

Ah, thanks! I didn't see next years date listed on their website for some reason. Missed the swap last year due to the snow (despite having a table paid for!), and still have a big box of parts I'd like to see find a new home, I'll have to ask for the night before off work so I can make it! Glad to see the swap is probably still happening, at first I was worried that was what got cancelled, I imagine turn-out was a little low this year due to the snow.

In business it is always grow or die. If you have a valid product.... you will live in competition. When you run out of ways to improve and grow the only choice left is to destroy your best practices and attempt to find new ones. Cycling popularity and sales have declined in recent years. At least as far as in sales of new bicycles.

Perhaps the market is saturated? There's tons of bikes out there now.

Possibly. But I am pretty sure... at least in America cycling has periods of popularity. The estimated number of American cyclist nationally is now down (43 million to 39 million). New bike sales are also down. I think... if it we were experiencing a "product saturation" the estimated user numbers would be no worse than flat.

I think that... no longer having an American cycling champion has hurt the road cycling sport in America. And having a former President promoting mountain biking as part of a healthy life style... has help mountain bicycle popularity. But I have no hard facts or stats to support my feelings/thoughts on that. But the bicycle shops I frequent say bike sales particularly road bike sales are down... and mountain bike sales are up (compared to previous years).

We aren't going to be seeing any shortages of bicycles anytime in an imaginable future.... you're certainly right about that.
