Jose Hernandez

Here in Seattle, I worked with Jose for about a year before he moved on to a different company. He was an incredibly sweet guy.

He died on July 24th of injuries sustained the week before, Friday July 17th.

Jose was on a training ride, headed south on Lake Washington Boulevard. A northbound van turned left onto Orcas, cutting across his path. Jose slammed into the passenger-side door. He was taken to Harborview with, but never regained consciousness. He died a week later.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Today (August 16th) his team (Team Cucina Fresca) have organized a memorial ride around South Lake Washington.

Just glancing through this made me tear up.
I have one...
Christopher Lee Johnson, 1987-2009, took his own life.
One of my best friends and my first real, regular riding partner.

Rest in Peace, Larry McQuien. He was riding in the I-20 Access Road at Mile Marker 415 in Aledo, Texas, less than a mile from his home. I never met him, but a friend said he used to work for Larry. He had taken up cycling with his son in an effort to get into shape. A friend of mine refuses to ride access roads. Now I know why. :(

A senseless loss, Gregory and Alexandra Bruehler.

Tandem bicyclists die in pickup accident:

A couple who survived a head-on collision two years ago (while driving in a car) were killed Thursday morning when a truck slammed into them as they rode a tandem bike in Northwest Bexar County, authorities said.

Gregory and Alexandra Bruehler, parents of a 7-year-old girl, were struck from behind while riding their two-person bicycle on the shoulder of Texas 16, about three miles north of Helotes.

Alexandra Bruehler, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 42-year-old husband was airlifted to University Hospital, where he died about an hour later. Their daughter, Kylie, was not with them.

01-17-10 -- Florida cyclist killed in hit-and-run

A cyclist yet to be identified was hit and killed by an intoxicated driver on Sunday morning. His blue Cannondale was dragged underneath the still speeding vehicle while he bled to death in the bike lane. The driver, barely fazed, was soon arrested and identified by witnesses as Carlos Bertonatti. The driver faced an infuriated and deeply disturbed group of cyclist's angry words as police took him into custody.

Let's hope justice is served.

A cycling friend from Michigan emailed me this notice of a National Ride of Silence.. Is one planned in your city..
..
.
http://www.rideofsilence.org/main.php
.
DATE: May 19, 2010
TIME: 7:00 pm
WHERE: Hundreds of locations world wide
Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph/20 kph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.
WHY DOES THIS ORGANIZATION EXIST?

* To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
* To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
* To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD

THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET
..On May 19, 2010, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. (Read the full history here...)

Friday May 21, couple of miles down from my office.

"Gary Anthony Thorne, 31, of Blue Gray Circle in Manassas, was the driver of an SUV that veered across Lee Highway Friday and hit and killed bicyclist Abdelouahid Chadli, 18, of Morrison Way in Fairfax."

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/cri...uv-driver.html

SUV crossed six lanes of traffic, over a median, and up a bike path to hit a high school kid waiting for the light to change. His girlfriend managed to get out of the way in time.

I can't get the link to the story because the regional community paper was too stupid not to archive the story.

Back on Jun 30, 2010 Staunton Sylvester Miller, a 48yr.-old father with a 20yr.-old daughter was killed when he was struck by a rather belligerent 34yr.-old Quinzy Reginald Fraser who:

1. Refused a Breathalyzer test
2. Had to be forcibly removed from the backseat of the police cruiser
3. Had to be dragged into the district station when he refused to walk
4. Had to be restrained upon entrance into the station
5. Had tried to bite several officers.

After all that, he was only charged 2nd Degree Assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. But NOTHING for killing Mr. Miller!!

RIP Manuel Contreras, March 2000. He was a close family friend that was struck and dragged to his death by a drunk driver in Los Angeles. The last time I saw him was that same night and he waved to me and my dad as he rode away on his bike.
