Question about crash during TDF

Today at the end of stage 5 two riders went down just before the finish line. Instead of getting up and hurrying to the line, they just stayed on the ground. Later they can be seen talking to each other. Doesn't their time still count against them? Or because they are so close to the end do they not have to finish? Does anyone know?

I believe that within a certain distance of the finish line (3km maybe?), if you're in the front pack and crash you still get the same time as pack you were in.

1k rule.

If a ride crashes in the last kilometer of the race, as long as they cross the line eventually they get the same time as the main peloton.

Unless a lot of people are lying the 1k rule has been extended out to 3 ks.

It saves a lot of grief. Imagine a fall near teh finish where riders are frantically hurrying to get back on their bikes as the next group comes arround the corner.

I'm pretty sure it's still 1K. Zabriskie's crash happened ~1.5K from the finish of the TTT - thus his finishing time was not the same as the team's.

TTs have different timing rules.

The TTT was different. They changed the rules this year for the TTT to 1 km. They also changed the rules for the other stages to 3km for safety reasons.

Quote:
Article 20 - Stage finishes
General provisions
Stage finishes are signalled by a ”red flame” hanging from the inflatable arch located one kilometre from the finishing line. In the event that the finishing portal is absent, the finish is signalled by a black and white chequered flag waved by a race official.
In the event a rider or riders suffer a fall, puncture or mechanical incident after passing the “red flame,” and such an incident is duly recognised, in the last 3 kilometres, the rider or riders involved are credited with the same finishing time of the rider or riders they were with at the time of the incident. They are attributed this ranking only upon crossing the finish line.
