It does seem like a strange rule to me. Im not rocking the boat. But it seems pretty harmless to start another thread about a specific action that has taken place within a stage to be discussed in its own seperate thread.

Whatever I guess.

Then we end up with +10 threads per stage, like the last few years ;)

Or do my opinions not count unless I have a certain time of membership and at said time of memebership length do all my previous opinions then become valid retroactive to day one? Clearly you dont want 7 George Hincapie threads but having one additional thread to discuss a specific occurence is not all that damaging to a board,in fact it keeps the board alive. Rather than having to read through 12 pages of other race stuff the discussion is more focused on a particular topic. Isnt that what a new thread is all about?

Listen, run the board anyway you want. I just think its a strange rule.

It could be a strange rule, but again... we create the thread stages for a reason. We've been running the Tour de France for years, and it was a problem when people who hadn't seen the stage yet clicked on a thread and saw what happened in that stage before they had a chance to watch it. To make things fairer, we created the stage threads. All we ask is that people post in that stage thread for the DAY. Not the rest of your lives... just the DAY. It gives people who do other things in the morning or during the day the opportunity to view the results on their own time. Plus, it cuts down on the irritation and hostility from members, because they aren't seeing information before they get a chance to view it themselves.

I think it became obvious within the first couple of pages just who won stage 15. I don't think would have been a stretch to say you really had to read through 8 pages of threads to make your point. But if you are not wanting to read through all the posts all over again, here's a trick... next to each thread title, just to the left is a blue arrow icon if there are new posts created since your last visit. If you click on that blue arrow, it takes you exactly to the first new post, and that means you get to skip over all the other posts you've already read. So there's no need to fumble through page after page trying to figure out if there is and where the new post is.

It seems in the last couple of days, I've been doing quite a bit of merging. I think what I may do is trash them temporarily and then move them later on when I have the time to move threads later. It takes a bit of time to merge, and as I pointed out to another forum member, when the server is crowded, and we're getting over a thousand folks on the server at once, it makes things run a lot slower, and I end up spending 5- 10 minutes doing one merge, only to see yet another spoiler pop up later on. It's easier to get back on when there are less people on the server and move the posts back later.

Well, that's my thought on it.

Im all good.

I appreciate your help Koffee in clarification.

I think were Im just not getting it is that people who tune in here and then get upset when they find the result out before they watch on thier Tivo or DVR or recording device. I mean what do you expect when you click on a message board about biking during the TdF? Heck, I think you would have a hard time just turning your computer on and not getting "spoiled", much less a specific bike forum that posts information about what your trying to avoid. IMO, to not think you are going to find the results of stage out on a message board after the stage has happened is lunacy. Regardless of what thread title you click on.

*deep breath in and exhale, deep breath in and exhale* ;) :P

ok im done with this.

I really like reading this board.

Repeat after me:

"The Tour de France is over in 6 days. The Tour de France is over in 6 days."

Repeat as necessary.

Most of these forums are viewable by nonmembers and some people change names. Just because a membership is new, it doesn't mean he hasn't been reading threads/posts for a long time nor does it preclude one from going back and reading older threads. One may have vivid recollections of the past threads and postings pre-join date.

I just think it's human nature for your opinions to be weighed against how many times you've posted with your currently registered name. Subconsciously we all build a trust or non-trust tolerance based on the frequency, and general knowledge projected through a series of posts by any individual. Of course, you can hardly make any assumptions to the validity of my statements because I too am relatively new here without much of a track record to fall back on.

I agree that it's a strange rule even if it's for a day. Peeps should not be surfing message boards if they don't wanna know what's going on. It would be like me turning on SportsCenter and getting upset because I haven't watched the games yet.

But I also agree, it's not my forum so I'll live by the rules, especially since overall, this is probably the best forum around. Wish there was one just as good for winter sports.

Are we going to have to go through this for the Vuelta also?

oboeguy 07-18-05 11:35 AM

I think the rule is good. You want to start a spoiler thread and can't wait? Tough, IMO. I've had too many other things spoiled online...

(That being said I'm not coming near this forum until I watch the latest stage!)

phidauex 07-18-05 12:08 PM

The rule is totally reasonable. There is more to discuss about the TdF than just 'who won today's stage'. That is one thing that makes this board BETTER than sportscenter, because it is possible to have a working no-spoiler solution. In fact, for the last 15 days it has worked fine! You can't look at the main page of the TdF forum and know who won that day's stage. You can still discuss the TdF, and see what is going on, and then watch the stage on your own later, just avoid the stage thread.

Personally I think its a very clever way of organizing things, and its working, so why f with it? ;)

peace,
sam
