What were the armbands Sunday?

Any ideas? Maybe in memory of Fabio? some riders had them & some did not.

Rich22 07-18-05 10:48 AM

Yes im memory of fabio.

oboeguy 07-18-05 11:13 AM

Yes. The bands had "Fabio" written on them and were in memory of him. It was nice to see some of the younger riders who weren't anywhere near the Tour in '95 wearing them.

Da Tinker 07-18-05 11:28 AM

Cool.
My bride (a limited rider) was watching the Tour with me Sunday. I mentioned how they were passing the monumnet to Fabio that day & how it was the 10th anniversary of his death.
She asked 'riders have died on the Tour?'. This opened up a long discourse ranging from Fabio to Kivilev and Tom Simpson.
Now if the mutton heads on ESPN would just understand there is a bit more to bike racing than 'just riding a bike'.

Not sure if OLN showed any of those bits, but several times on the France 2/3 feed, they showed close-ups of Kroon, and several times he pointed to the band, and then to his head in the customary "don't forget" signal. He wasn't even a pro then. Good on 'im!

Lance was Fabio's teammate and friend on the '95 Motorola team, and Hincapie was the 10th pick for the Motorola team for the '95 tour, just afer Casertelli. Hincapie basiclly replaced Casertelli on the '96 Motorola team and has finished every Tour de France with them since then.

Now this....

Australian team rider Amy Gillet dead after crash

Australian rider Amy Gillet has died after she and other riders from the Australian women's team were hit by a car during a training ride in Germany on Monday. Three other team members are reported to be in critical condition after being helicoptered to hospital, and the remaining two are also still in hospital, albeit with less serious injuries. The other riders involved are Katie Brown, Lorian Graham, Kate Nichols, Alexis Rhodes and Louise Yaxley; all are being treated in hospitals in Leipzig and Zwickau.

The team was riding along the Landstrasse between Zeulenroda and Auma (Kreis Greiz), reconnoitering the course of the opening time trial of the Thueringen Rundfahrt stage race which was scheduled to start today. A car driven by an 18-year woman entered from a slip road on the opposite side of the road. The driver, who had passed her test just four weeks before, apparently lost control of the car and crossed into the lane where the team was riding, hitting all six riders.

The first stage of the Thueringen Rundfahrt has been cancelled. A service of commemoration will be held instead.

So sad.
